Functional Exercise Progressions presents 13 sample progressions covering every major muscle group. As many as 23 different exercises are provided for each muscle group, arranged according to the level of difficulty, progressing from easiest to most difficult to perform. This large-format guide includes over 250 different exercises with dozens of clear photographs and detailed exercise descriptions.

The book also comes with an easy-to-use CD ROM containing images and descriptions of all of the progressions and exercises from the book. Trainers can display the images on a computer to help their clients better visualize the optimal movements, and then specific exercises and images can be printed and given to clients. The printed exercises include space for notes so that trainers can personalize progressions, with areas to watch, variations, repetitions, etc.

A book on functional exercise progressions for all the major muscle groups is a "must have" resource for physical therapists and assistants, as well as fitness professionals and enthusiasts alike! As a physical therapist, I love Mary Yoke and Carol Kennedy's idea of demonstrating exercises based on an exercise continuum ranging from easiest/safest to hardest/riskiest and ensuring that the pictures in the book demonstrate individuals using impeccable alignment. As a personal trainer and group exercise leader, I appreciate the book's wealth of exercise variations using equipment commonly found in both the weight room and group fitness room. Functional Exercise Progressions is an easy-to-understand book offering information that can be readily applied by anyone. I can recommend it to patients transitioning to post-rehab fitness, personal training clients, and group exercise participants.

Carol Kennedy and Mary Yoke's Functional Exercise Progressions is not just a tool, but a philosophy. The book has allowed me, as a personal trainer, to positively influence my clients' lives to a greater extent, because they can truly feel the benefits of exercise and understand its application to activities of daily living. Once they make the transition to purposeful exercise, they enjoy activity more and are more likely to become lifelong maintainers.

Chris Arterberry, MS, ACSM H/Fl, CSCS, ACE CPT
Associate Director of Campus Recreation, Fitness/Wellness
Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago, Illinois

As a manager and owner of a health club for over 20 years, I have watched the industry of personal training evolve. Functional Exercise Progressions is invaluable for exercise professionals because, in one publication, it gives them all the resources needed to develop safe exercise progressions based on the unique needs of each client. It is also valuable for managers as a teaching and evaluation tool for new hires and as a continuing education tool for existing employees. Carol and Mary bring a great deal of practical experience to this topic and have a passion to share that experience with every exercise professional.
