Yep, UW.

How old's the dad? You'd better get him on the forum!

He's 51 in a week. Never lifted weights before but hes always been pretty athletic. Its nice to be able to lift with him, for sure.
Oddly enough he went to UW for his masters... After graduating from WSU!
dunno if i can coax him to the forum, though....

Most of the "older" guys on the forum have been lifting for many years. I'm 56 and have been lifting seriously for a little over 2 years. The fact that he's been athletic (I haven't been particularly) should serve him well.

Yeah, the UW/WSU thing probably creates all sorts of psychological problems! Actually, he's probably a true Cougar--grad school doesn't create the kind of loyalty that college does.

yes, we're a coug family for sure, my mom went there, too. I cant say its really in my college plans though. Maybe if the football team were better...

My progress has slowed on Starting Strength, and I'm feeling run-down from giving max effort on 3-4 lifts every lifting day and playing frisbee, so I'm going to switch to 5/3/1 soon.
I'm thinking:

Sunday
Hang Cleans 3x3
Squat 5/3/1
Squat 5x10
Good Morning 5x10

Monday
Bench Press 5/3/1
BB Row 3x8
Pushups 5+x10+

Wednesday
Sumo Deadlift 5/3/1
Sumo Deadlift 5x10
Front Squat 3x10

Thursday
Press 5/3/1
Press 5x10
Chin-ups 3 sets

Sound like a plan?

Looks good to me.

Personally i would put in some single-leg work, some 'core' work and some middle/lower trap work.

Thanks for the input. I'll replace front squats with bb lunges and throw in pallofs on deadlift of press day.

Nice pullup numbers for both of you!

I personally find I get more total volume (total reps in this case) if I go easier on sets 1 and 2 and max out set three. So with your numbers I'd do 6/6/7+. But YMMV. I mean, I get good results doing max/max/max sometimes as well.

thanks and thanks for the suggestion

I actually do save a couple reps on the first set - I think i could do nine, maybe ten. For some reason, I just like to get the higher reps out of the way on the first set, probably so I don't have to do anything earth-shattering on the last set

How's your dad doing on his lifting?

My son will be back home for the summer in about 3 weeks--I'm really looking forward to lifting with him again.

He's doing well. He was really struggling with deadlifts but we made some changes and his progress has been much better - he got 225 today. Everything else is moving up, too. His latest chinup numbers are 12/10/8 t  . He's enjoying it and I think his body feels pretty good for the most part. I'm trying to get him to eat some more, though, since he's only 5'8 150ish, even after gaining 10 pounds since the start.

Have fun with your son. Is he in college? I'll miss lifting with my dad when I go off to college next year.

Yeah, he's just finishing his Sophomore year at Northwest Nazarene, in Nampa, Idaho. Will you be going to WSU?

I'll be at Whitman in Walla Walla, holding up the Eastern Washington tradition. I'll still root for the Cougs all the way.

Whitman's a good school. Close friends of mine went there. They used to play NNU in sports, but I don't know if they are still in the same conference. Good luck! Walla walla will be very different than Seattle!
