I realize that there are grounds to challenge the technical validity of the most recent [somewhat publicized] study. But the article mentions that there has been a total of three that have suggested this link, and after years of munching on a handful of pills (without really counting) a couple times a day... I might be toning it down, just in case.

There is a limit to how much fish oil you need, or can benefit from and it's better to get it from fish anyway. It's likely that any ill effects from fish oil come from the fact that poly-unsaturates are easily oxidized.

However, this study doesn't prove that omega 3 contributed to the cancer, just that blood levels were correlated with the cancer. It may be that the omega 3 was elevated because of the cancer or they were both affected by some other unknown factor. There was also no assesment of total mortality. Perhaps prostate cancer was a flip side of some other positive attribute like high testosterone.

Consider also that this study looks at relative risk, and not absolute risk. A modest increase in an event with a small liklihood is a small effect. It may be that there is a larger positive effect from eating fish, like reduction in inflamation, and that effect may overwhelm the risk shown here. Don't read to much into this.

Abstract

Incidence and mortality rates for prostate cancer are reported to be low among Inuit, but this finding must be additionally supported given the difficulty of obtaining a precise medical diagnosis in the Arctic. We conducted an autopsy study in 1990-1994 among 61 deceased males representative of all deaths occurring in Greenland and found only one invasive prostate cancer. Histological data were available for 27 autopsies and revealed no latent carcinoma. Our results suggest that in situ carcinoma is rare among Inuit and that their traditional diet, which is rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and selenium, may be an important protective factor.
