How many of you guys eat grass fed beef? or anything grass fed?

I went to a few meat shops in ottawa and some didnt even know what grass fed is, "What else do they eat?" They asked.

Finnaly i found one that knew, but they didnt have any though they were getting some more in a few months.

Once im old enough im just gonna buy a gun, get my license/hunting license and shoot a deer and eat it.

I did buy some Bisson today, Grain fed it was pretty good but, that plus swiss chard wasnt enough so i made some bacon.

Most bison won't eat grain but I guess you can't hold back progress. :(

Be careful of what grocery stores call "grass fed". All beef is "grass fed" most of the time but is then "grain finished", which means it's been fed corn the last 3 months or so. That makes the cow gain weight in a hurry and increases the profits. The grain finishing ruins the quality of the meat. The only way you can be sure that it's truly grass fed and grass finished is to talk to the farmer. Put in an order during the spring for a side or a quarter to be delivered in the fall. They will usually cut, wrap and ship it to you. You will need a large freezer. If you're a hunter, you will need 2 freezers.

The farmers feed them grains for allot of reasons:
Requires less land and able to produce more cattle
It makes the cows more fat so they can make more $$ per cow
Grains are cheap
It all comes down do Production and Profit, Which i don't have a problem with unless it affects my health. Which this does.

Grain fed has allot of omega 6 and probably no omega 3
Since the cows are fed grains they sometimes get sick and have to be taken off the lot, where they are given antibiotics and then put back into the lot where they become slaughtered and those antibiotics often end up in our food.
Grains also have less vitamins and minerals than grass fed.

Farm animals would rather eat grass over grains

so grain has a negative effect on the immune system, is that true for humans as well? So if i eat a load of grains then it's bad times?

That's right. Grain should be eaten in moderation. Unless you're a chicken, you did not evolve to eat grain and neither did cows. Grass, and other green leafy stuff, contain Omega 3. Seeds, like corn, contain Omega 6. Therefore cows fed corn for 3 months will have virtually all omega 3 in their fat replaced with omega 6. In addition, grass fed beef is high in CLA and other nutrients that are lost with grain finishing. Even chickens benefit from being able to eat grass and bugs. They will continue to eat 80% grain since they're a bird, and birds eat seeds.

so that basically rules out all breakfast cereals? I mean i know that most of them, particularly the ones aimed at kids, have loads of sugar so are best avoided, but does that mean even the ones that are supposedly a 'healthy way to start the day' are bad for you?

CLA = conjugated linoleic acid, found in meat and dairy, it has anti-carcinogenic, and antioxidant properties.

Like Stuward said, humans originally did not evolve to eat grains, and followers of paleolithic type diets eliminate them altogether, so some would say that yes all cereals are bad for you but in the grand scheme of things, if breakfast cereal is the worst thing you eat, you'd be doing pretty O.K IMO.

In moderation they're OK. I eat oatmeal a couple times/week. I eat eggs most of the time. In general though, cereals are NOT a 'healthy way to start the day'.

that sucks, i don't personally eat breakfast cereals anyway, don't like 'em, but there's always so much advertising on the telly about how these wholegrain breakfast cereals are so good for you.

A good rule of thumb, not just for food, is "If they have to advertise it, it's crap".

One of our big mfr's is in a bit of hot water right now because of it's marketing campaign for cheerios, saying it helps lower chloresterol and is heart healthy. The FDA finally got off it's rear end and is telling them to knock it off, there's no hard research to back it up, even though it MIGHT be a small contributory factor.
