I am doing an internship right now at a performance training centre and today i saw some power athletes doing single dumbell high pull snatches (i think thats what their called). along with other one sided power lifts.

can you tell me if this type of training is needed for a long jumper?

While it's not sport specific, it definately requires total body power in an explosive effort. I would definately recommend then. In fact, in a program by Javorek that I have for sprinters and jumpers, he uses both the BB split snatch, and the one arm DB snatches- a LOT.

thanks...so do you think it should be an all year round lift periodized through general prep, Max Strength and then conversion to power like al the other lifts?

Well, it sounds like you are using Bompa's model. I know about, and do not necessarily go with it. I like Javorek's model much better, where they do periodize, but not in the same terms with the same lifts. I would definately use them year round, just vary the loading parameters. If you are interning in a training center, I would go talk to the coaches there and see what they recommend.
