I'm sure this will draw the ire of many a hardcore bber, but here goes...

I recently tried performing deadlifts and squats from the low pulley on my home gym (the one below the leg extension - not the one used for rows). Deadlifts with a straight bar attached to the pulley seem perfectly natural. And if I turn around and face away from the machine, it is quite simple to do hack squats from the same low pulley.

I'm not a hardcore bodybuilder, but rather a middle-aged, just trying to stay in shape, casual but regular (3 days per week) trainer. I'm simply looking for a way to perform squats and deads effectively and safely at home, with the equipment I currently have. It is not necessary to advise me to get more free weights - I'm aware that they are preferred for these exercises. But unless and until I acquire additional weight, is there any problem with using the above method?

Sounds good to me (another middle-aged (45-y/o) wt. lifter to another).

I mean, at least you're DOING deadlifts. No one in my gym seems to do them other than me. Maybe that's why I get all those funny looks...
