I don't know about climbing for lat development. It probably depends a lot of technique and what your climbing (rope, tree, rockwall, etc). I would surmise however that chin-ups are probably better for developing absolute strength, since you can easily add weight and keep the reps low. Meanwhile, with most forms of climbing the emphasis is on relative strength and strength endurance.
