Been forever since I've posted.

At USPA lifting meet in Albuquerque, Sept 12(?) 2015 (somewhere in there)

First power-lifting competition, so first time I've had "Competitive" judged personal bests. All lifts were performed according to the USPA requirements for "Raw". Belt was allowed, but I don't train with one, so I opted not to use one for the competition. Used wrist wraps on the Bench. All weights in pounds.

Squat: 550
Bench: 375
DL: 550

I went conservative on weight since I was nervous about all of my lifts: for squat, would I make depth? For Bench, how bad was the pause going to kill me? For DL, would I be able to hold on to the bar?

Not have a training judge to give me confidence in my squat depth caused an injury: I know that as weight goes up, squat depth tends to shallow out, so on my last squat (which was lower weight than my gym 1RM) I really "relaxed" into the hole, going super deep. I heard pops from my knees and experienced significant pain right above the kneecap after racking the weight (still made the lift). It has taken almost 4 months for this to fully resolve. Comment from an old-timer as I was walking away from my last attempt was something along the lines of: "You've got the deepest squat I've ever seen!". Piece of advice to myself: get a training partner who can judge depth, so you don't end up pushing past what's actually needed...and hurting yourself in the process.

My final bench attempt was 405, and I stalled about two inches up. Again, this was less than my gym 1RM, but waiting for the "press" command was a completely new thing and it really messed with my head. In the future I'll train with a pause.

DL was simultaneously both most satisfying and most frustrating. I can DL over 600 with straps, so the challenge here was just holding on to the bar. I was surprised by how drained I was when we finally got to the DL portion, I actually cramped up while putting on my DL socks! I approached the competition just like I did training, controlled movement from start to finish, I don't drop the weight. This bit me in the ass on my second lift (500). Going up was fine, coming down, something twinged in my lower back. I went and laid on the floor until my last attempt (which I probably should have skipped), where I got three white lights on 550, but I had to go lay down on the floor for a while immediately after. This took a couple of weeks to resolve (wasn't serious).

All three lifts were competition judged and are the USPA state records for my age and weight category (43 years/308lbs, weigh in at 299). Coming back from the double knee injury has been one of the scariest and most frustrating processes in my lifting career. Not knowing if they'd actually come back because it was taking so long to heal. Doing the competition and meeting all the other lifters was an amazing experience though, I highly recommend! Next time I think I'll try and figure out how to use a belt too...

Hey, thanks for posting that. I've often wondered what competing would be like, and at this point in my life, other people's accounts are probably the closest I'll come!

Congratulations to you, Khronos8! Thanks for the writeup.

With my diagnose I guess I won`t train heavy anymore, so I could just write down my last "actual maxes"...

Not much, didn`t reach all goals, but at least something for me personally. ;)

300 for 5

Two in one day! I may have cut depth a teeny bit on that last rep :)

I'm thinking I've got my best shot ever of making my everlasting goal of a 5 plate deadlift. Saturday I will attempt to repeat my lifetime best of 465, and have been seeing steady progress on lower body for last 4 months. I have a program that is working, I'm very optimistic.

Bench Press: 230, 5# improvement

Then 5 minutes later: 235, for a 10# improvement over a plateau that lasted 4 years.
