I don't know. Many powerlifters do sumo deadlifts. I do them sometimes as part of another exercise - another crossfit hybrid, the Sumo Deadlift High Pull. I do lots of them (usually 50 or 100) at a low weight (20kg). But when I do deadlifts, I do just normal bent-legged deadlifts.

You are built like me - we're both tall and thin. I think you can learn to deadlift fine. The sumo deadlift is a good exercise but try regular deadlifts first.
