Post subject:  Weightlifting Slang and Abbreviations

The goal of this thread is to accumulate weightlifting slang and abbreviations to serve as a resource for beginners (or just so that there can be less confusion in general, no need to ask what an acronym stands for) and also to standardize said slang. Certainly I am not the sole authority on this topic, so please chime in with anything I may forget (which may be alot...). Since most of our interaction here is written I'm going to limit it to what you may actually see on the boards.

Slang/Abbreviation - Meaning
W'lifting - Weightlifting
P'lifting - powerlifting
D'lifting - deadlifting
BB - barbell
DB - dumbbell
WG - wide grip
NG - narrow grip
sumo - wide stance
As Br C - A sets, B reps in each set, at weight C
AxBxC - same as above

I can't really think of anything else right now, but I'm sure there's more out there, please add something to the list.

sumo isn't just wide stance, it is with your feet pointed out a bit too. Really just used to describe a deadlift method. It looks just like a sumo wrestler.

Sumo implies wide stance. I have never heard of it referring to toes pointed out but I guess you can attach that definition although I know people who sumo deadlift and do not point their toes out so that is a bit contradicting.

OH=Overhead
OL=Olympic Lifting
PL=Powerlifting
DL=Deadlift
CG=Close Grip
BP=Bench Press
RDL=Romanian Deadlift
GHR=Glute Hamstring Raise

Westside Powerlifting Slang
DE=Dynamic Effort
ME=maximum Effort
RE= Repeated Effort

AMSAP=As many sets as possible
AMSAP=As many reps as possible

C&J= Clean and Jerk

Superset=combining exercises one done immediately following another

I will add more later if I can recall more.

I'm sure that's what you meant. Thanks for the additions! Also, it should be mentioned that AMRAP is also referred to as 'taking a set to failure' or just, 'to failure'. So:

Failure = As many reps as possible

I didn't know anyone did them like that. I've never seen it myself. Of course I've only seen a couple other guys that do it besides me.

Looks like Ryan and Ironman have the acronyms covered. Just a comment on sumo and wide. It's probably because I am club foote, but sumo, to me, is with toes pointed outI point my toes and knees out close to 90 degrees, and with this stance, I feel it is quite easy to drop my trunk down through the hips, getting well below parallel, and keeping the trunk as upright as possible. Back when I did PL (the 70's, LOL) I got a 478 pull in the 148's using this style. No great shakes, but a PR for me.
