What is your opinion on lying lateral raises compared to side lateral raises when it comes to lateral delt development.

For the sake of clarification: are we talking about the difference between http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/DeltoidLateral/DBLyingLateralRaise.html this and http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/DeltoidLateral/DBLateralRaise.html?

never done the lying ones so I can't really compare (it seems like it might be an awkward thing to do in a gym)

I can't go heavy on lying laterals ... or cable laterals for that matter (both involve reaching across), since if I do my shoulder joints start to hurt. If I do them at all (haven't in some time) I have to go very light.

You can also do lying laterals lying sideways on an incline bench, which changes the angle (obviously).
