Hello all,

Quick one really, my friend who lives near me only really has access to a tiny local gym (as opposed to my work one) which doesn't even have a freestanding bench/rack - just a smith.

So my question is, how important would you say it was to bench outside of a smith? should it be avoided like the plague or is it just something that will cap out sooner rather than later?

so like... on a 1-10 scale, 1 being "its a minor issue which effects people differently" - 10 being "do not use a smith to bench, end of story".

Thanks

I'd say a 5.

It all depends on if the smith puts him in what would be his typical range of motion.

I'd recommend he do it 2-3x/wk for a couple weeks - see if he notices any shoulder girdle pain - if not, and he's doing it for purely aesthetic reasons, he'll probably be fine.

It's surely better than nothing.

Are there no dumbells? I use the smith to do close grip incline bench as a tricep exercise as one of the last exercises because I can go to failure on it and isolate triceps more. I've never tried it flat but can imagine the pathway of the bar would be unnatural. But yeah, better than nothing. Anywhere to do dips?

Yes theres a pull up rack thingie (the technical term of course) which has handles for dips

But yea fair point, just personally I don't often do DB press (purely because I just use the bar not because I think it's a worse exercise) so it didn't occur to me

I guess we will see how he feels under the smith after a few weeks and throw in dumbells 50/50 too.
