I was pretty skeptical about these claims but my cousin took me down to his training facility in sauga and I have to say it was immpressive. I'm not the strongest guy in the world and have worked out on/ off for the past 6 years. I can bench 2 plates aside 5 times and with the guard i was able to squeeze out 8 reps. Has anyone heard of these types of guards?

BTW to keep in tune with the geek character, the article ends with these recommendations:

1. Drive the back of your head into the bench (engages neck extensors)
2. Keep the shoulder blades back and together (engages rhomboids and mid/lower traps)
3. Squeeze the bar hard (engages forearm flexors and extensors, increases activity in rotator cuff)
4. Attempt to ‘pull the bar apart’ (engages lats and upper back musculature)
5. Push knees out (engages hip abductors)
6. Drive your toes through the front of your trainers and heels into the floor (depending on the foot position of your set-up) (engages knee flexors and extensors)
7. Perform the Valsalva Manoeuvre (engages deep core musculature, increases intra-abdominal pressure)

1 IIRC Rip says it's a great way to get hurt
2 & 7 standard technique
3 & 4 don't work for me
5 great tip
6 ????

Actually the A.T was explaining it had to do with decompressing the nerves in your jaw and that initiated a chain reaction resulting in a release of nerve energy that was being sent to your core muscles., similar to an orthotic or spinal traction but its to your jaw by wearing a mouth guard. He said there is literature on it , when/ if he gives it I'll post it.

That makes no sense. What nerves are being decompresses? What is "nerve energy"??? How does that "energy" get from nerves in the jaw to the core muscles? Just makes no sense.

This is why we continue to improve as people, the thirst for learning....take a look at the articles in regards to jaw position and increase in strength. Sujects that we are not familiar with will not make sense unless you are open minded and willing to learn.

look up the new orlean saints and mouthguards, the year they won the super bowl. This stuff apparently is main stream in professional sports.

Look up any superstition and associate it with anyone who won anything, and then say that observing the superstition is the cause of the win. Every sports team has people who follow superstitions, so any winning team has them. Of course, the losing teams also have superstitions. How many other teams used mouth guards?

This is not a new topic, and I've dealt with it many times through the years. Bite guards sometimes help with jaw problems. But there is no such thing as nerve energy, and there is no logical connection between nerves in the jaw and the "core".

nerve energy was term that I made up, from what I remembered of my conversation. I'm not a neurodentist and I dont know if you are. Your outlook on this topic is very childish as you dont use any facts to back up your opinion. Rutgers University did a double blind study on college level basketball players and there were significant findings in improved peak power output and vertical jump.

I will be posting other peer reviewed articles for your viewing and reading pleasure. I am trying to contribute to this community as I have been visiting this site since 2002.

Please excuse the Doc, he pretty much wastes all his time on fruitless threads here on exrx. You'd think he'd be out actually helping the folks in the jungles of the indian ocean

I proposed once that saying the pledge of allegiance three times before bench presing would settle the stipoluter nerves, and lead to increases in loading.
He's told me there was no relation between the stipoluter nerve and bench pressing.

You cant win with someone like that.
