This is not from the Journal of Irreproducable Results.

This is scary stuff.

Wow...

Yes, this is scary stuff..

I'm quite guilty of eating crap fast food way to often, but no, I would not even consider taking a Statin as a precautionary measure.

I would rather mitigate my risks in other ways such as exercise, which is what I try to do.

It reminds me of a Southpark episode with Billy Mays trying to sell "chipotle-a-way" that cleaned the blood out of your underwear after eating it - saying its solved rectal bleeding because it cleans up the mess afterwards so you can each as much as you like now :)

They generally don't publish joke-articles in that journal unfortunately.

I really don't know what to say.

The editorial was obviously (to me) being facetious. I think it's hilarious.

It would be hilarious except for the response it's getting.

This perpetuates the myth that fat in general is bad for you. It also perpetuates the myth that Statins are harmless and beneficial to the general population and also that high total cholesterol is dangerous. This is a not too subtle attempt at marketing drugs to the general population. I find this insidious manipulation of the population incredibly irresponsible and disturbing. Maybe I'm more tuned into this due to my marketing background mixed with my general mistrust of big business and big Pharm in general.

The big lies are buriesd in the article and delivered in a matter of fact way that removes them from the discussion, hidden by the humor of the superficial aspect of the article. This is the most insidious way of lying and the most damaging.

It's a class of drug designed to lower cholesterol. It's one of the most profitable drugs in existence even though is has proven dangerous side effects, has no proven effectiveness in the general population and the only benefit is due to an unintentional side effect. (it reduces inflammation, and may reduce the risk of dying of heart disease for men of a certain age who have already been diagnosed with it.)
