This is a great book for beginners and more experienced lifters will learn things as well. or relearn things they've forgotten. It has all the basic info you need without a lot of fluff. Nutrition information is very limited but it has some fundamental guidelines that are useful.

There are a couple of errors. I'll finish this later.

For beginners the best book is "Starting Strength". The exercise guidance is fantastic. It doesn't have many exercises but it has the important ones in great detail. "New Rules of Lifting" is a good program for someone who's been stuck in the old jog a bit, do machines a bit type routine. A true beginner will make faster progress with "Starting Strength". Another good one that came out recently is "Built for Show" by Nate Green. It's geared more to teen age boys but it has some good basic workouts.

I'll second Stu here. Starting Strength is better for a beginner - much more instruction on the basic lifts.

But, NROL is a good program. I just think it's a little more complex than it needs to be when you are starting out.

All I had to see was one of the author's names to be convinced the NROL was a good book. Cosgrove doesn't associate himself with bogus or non-productive stuff. As I recall, one of the guys here at this site was posting a routine in his/her workout log and was doing a routine from the book. looked terribly interesting.

The book is broken down into workouts for hypertrophy, fat loss, strength, etc. The number of exercises is fairly high as well. I think it's a good second program. Those feature are not negatives, just that for a beginner it's a little complex. On the other hand, the companion book New rules of Lifting for Women seems a lot more focused and useful for a beginner. I would definately recommend it as a first book for women. It's only because "Starting Strength" is out there already that I recommend that book first.
