AM: MMA class. Worked "light contact" MMA with J~. That's a euphemism for "don't punch full power" but otherwise full bore. Did okay, mostly, but ate and gave a lot of punches. Lots of good practice on the clinch, punch-to-clinch, level changes, and striking on the ground. Good stuff.

One thing I like about J~ is he's always able to go the same level as me. We can go hard without going nuts, and get in good training. Plus he takes advice well, so if I feel him doing something sub-optimal I can tell him and he'll adjust, making me work that much harder to counter the next time. We went at least a full hour without real breaks, and then more slowly for 20 minutes before we really had nothing safe left in the tank. Great training day.

7/1/13

Afternoon: Lower concentration

Warmup: Mobility drills

1a) Bulgarian Split-Squat - 3 x 8 per leg x 8, 10, 15# DBs
1b) DB RDL - 3 x 12 x 35
2a) Step Up w/Knee Up - 3 x 10 x bw
2b) Leg Curl - 3 x 15 x #13
3a) Tempo Tube Press - 3 x 10 x yellow
3b) Wide Grip Row and Hold - 3 x 10 x 2s hold x #16
4) Calf Raise - 120 x vest

***

BSS - felt good today - good and strong. Found the easiest way to set up is to knee in the down position in front of the bench and set up from there.

RDL - Fine.

SU w/KU - felt a little hard after the heavier BSSes.

Leg Curl - next week, same weight for 20.

Press - maybe went out to far today, felt it a little in my injured shoulder.

Rows - experimenting with a new grip. Standing wide grip is trickier but felt fine.

Calf Raises - 120 sucked. Next week 125.

AM: HICT

HICT Elliptical - 10 minutes, 2 minutes break, 10 minutes @ 10/100 with a 40# weighted vest on.

***

HICT was a good idea, but I forgot to put my water next to me. Bad idea. With the heat wave coming through, and the vest on, I was sweating like crazy. I ended up needing to stop to get water just to think about continuing. Next time I'll be more ready.

AM: MMA class. Worked mostly with C~, who is getting ready for a fight, and some work with B~ (who is coming back after a layoff) and LK~ (who knows all my moves even if he can't counter all of them). Good, hard class.

7/8/13

Afternoon: Lower Body/Light Upper

Warmup: Mobility Drills

1a) Bulgarian Split-Squat - 8 per leg x 10# DBs, 2 x 8 per leg x 15# DBs
1b) DB RDL - 12 x 35# DBs, 2 x 12 x 40# DBs
2a) Step Up w/Knee Up - 3 x 12 x bw
2b) Leg Curl - 3 x 20 per leg x #13
3a) Tempo Tube Press - 3 x 10 x yellow
3b) Wide Grip Row w/Hold - 3 x 12 x 3s x #16
4) Calf Raise - 125 x vest

***

BSS/RDL - these felt good. I am slowly getting stronger on these. My knees feel fine, too. I had more in me than 15 pounds, but I'm taking it slow no matter what. I'm going minimum effective dose here, not maximum possible weight.

Step ups/Leg curls - step ups remain oddly hard. Leg curls are progressing nicely.

Tempo Press - felt good and solid this week.

Wide Grip Rows - also good. I need to up these, slowly.

Calf Raise - the goal is to keep going until 200, then drop back to 100 and add weight. This is endurance more than anything else, but I also know I can do them without stressing my knees, and ever little bit helps.

7/9/13

Late Afternoon: Burmese Boxing Class. Did one-twos, and worked on my distance w/D~, a woman whose name I forgot, and Phil.

***

I really have a bad habit of fighting in the danger zone - where I'm too close to stuff a takedown but too far to clinch. It's a vision thing - I can't see very far without my glasses, so I tend to fight where things are clear. Like in kendo, I need to trust what I see and learn to attack from further out and adjust my targeting as I come in. I can do it, it's just correcting my sloppy habit.

Walked up over 50 flights of steps today, mostly in one big bunch.

7/12/13

AM: Upper/Light lower

Warmup: Mobility drills

1a) Bottom-Up KB Press - 10 x 15, 2 x 10 x 25, 8 x 35
1b) One-Arm Cable Row - 3 x 10 x #16+5# plate
2) Reverse Lunge - 2 x 8 x 15# DBs
3a) Hammer Curl - 3 x 20 x 20# DBs
3b) Bar Pushdown - 3 x 20 x #13

***

KB press - both arms feel okay on these. 35 was brutally hard. I did not have 9 in me, I barely had 8.

Rows - felt very strong today.

Lunges - didn't want to do stepups after 50+ flights day, so I did these instead. Did not feel great, which is why I did only two sets.

Curls/Pushdowns - it's going to be hard to go up on these yet get 20 reps. Not sure what I'll do, because set 3 is already very hard. Maybe stay here until I'm really adapted to it?

AM: MMA class. Worked ground with S~ and LK~, some pad holding with J-L.

***

Again, I largely owned LK because I'm a bigger version of his exact same game. But we worked a sweet compression lock last week and I had to work very hard to stay out of it. I also failed to fall for a trick while putting a sub on him - I was choking him with shoulder pressure and suddenly his arm was out, vulnerable to an arm bar. I knew it was a lure, so I ignored it. He was hoping I'd go for it, relieve the pressure, and then be able to get his arm back - and he probably would have, too, so I am glad I trusted I was in proper position to finish the choke. It's cool for me to train with him because I can really get my moves and ensure I'm doing them correctly, yet I had to keep working hard to stay just ahead of him.
