Well, depending on the type of arthritis, there is usually stiffness associated with the disease and the cold tends to cause more stiffness by contracting muscles and the such. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that the cold tends to magnify stiffness and the pain associated with this stiffness, so people with arthritis prefer warmth due to its cause of muscle relaxation. However, there aren't many studies on the subject of temperature's effect on arthritis because there really isn't a scale for measuring stiffness or pain.
