I Climb the stairs in my high-rise (28 floors) every night to try to lose my pot-gut. I have tried to find a website that could tell me how many calories this burns, but cant find one. Does anyone here know? It takes me 10 mins to get to the 28th floor and about 7 mins. to get back down (i dont take the elevator back down, i walk back down the stairs). There are 598 steps. Anyone can help?
It depends on your weight. It's hard to burn more than about 100 calories or so in 10 minutes of any activity unless you're in exceptional condition. Assuming you're keeping a steadu pace, given the relatively low intensity you won't get much afterburn either. To get a significant calorie burn, you either have to do it longer or increase the intensity. Taking the stairs down may actually be counterproductive. The stress is all eccentric so it's harder to recover from. Better would be to take the elevator down and do another lap. Even better is to do it in 5 floor sprints, rest a minute and do another 5 floors until you get to the top. If you have to pause every few floors to catch your breath, that's good. If you're not, start running the stairs.
