My parents dog is the same way. Often she'll steal something of yours, usually a sock or shoe, and deliberately shows it to you, in order to get you to chase her. She'd rather play keep-away than fetch.

PS.) She always seems to know who's shoe she's taking, since she'll carry it over and show it to that person before darting away. This makes sense since dogs can identify individual people (and their belongings) by scent.

Also, being half lab and half dachshund she has a very good nose. For example, once in the back yard I threw a ball for her. As usual she took off after it at full speed, litterally kicking up grass as she went. Halfway across the yard, she stops dead in her tracks, turns 90-degrees and starts trailing something into the bushes fogetting all about the ball. A moment later a cottontail darts out of the bushes with Cassie in hot pursuit. The rabbit sprints across the yard and makes it under the fence just ahead of the dog. One wrong move and she would have caught it.

that type of behavior is exactly what i meant. It's funny until it happens at the wrong time. It's funny then too, afterwards.

I know what you mean, it's annoying when your in hurry to go somewhere and have to chase her down to get your sneaker back. She's hard to catch too, since she's small enough to fit under and between furniture (she can fit under the coffee table without even slowing down).

Just a note on the original post. Border collies are used extensively on farms here in Australia so I don't think the heat will be a problem as long as they are well hydrated.

Whippets all the way...Wonderful dog, easier to care for that the sheppards. They do not have to be worked as much to keep them from being destructive. Whippets are probably the most athletic dog breed there is (From the westminster dog show).

Ours love to run and is faster than anything you have seen, very affectionate, smart, but not too smart, loves to sleep, very dedicated, fairly easy to train, very active outside but calm and quiet inside, minimal grooming, best for warmer weather due to short hair.

We just love ours, the breeder called them potato chip dogs, one is never enough. We started looking at a second within a month and barely resisted. Good with kids too.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever is is the strongest and most powerful of the sporting dogs. This large dog loves hunting but also is a great family dog and gets along well with all children.

Chihuahuas.
