Hi people,

I'm just wondering if it's ok to post up a couple of squat and deadlift vids to get people to comment on my form?... or is there somewhere more appropriate?

Sorry about the length of the squat vid (about 3 mins)but I wanted to get all 3 work sets in there to see how my form degraded over time.

My opinion is that I need to keep my weight further back in the squat.

As for deadlift, I reckon I need to keep my butt down until the bar moves from the floor

Hi Jaymond, I agree with both your comments. Your deadlift looks like a romanian deadlift. Try to stay more upright at the start of the movement. As for your squat you are leaning forward a little as you are coming up which could be dangerous. There is a slight jerk at the end of the up phase also and try not to look at your feet with the bar on your shoulders as you might injure yourself. I would practice maintaining form with lighter weights for a while. You shouldn't need to drop too much weight off the bar and it shouldn't take too long to correct your technique.

I think most of us could do with a form check once in a while. I often find some small problems with my technique on some exercises.

I thought the DL was fine, MOST times. I did see the butt come up quickly a few times. I agree w/Recmatt on the squat. I saw what I think was the upper back rounding causing you to go a bit forward on about half the lifts.

I think with my squats I'm afraid to lean back more as I've got no safety rails to dump the weights onto if I go too far... and I don't think the inlaws would take kindly to chunks missing from the garage floor ;)

Anyone got ideas for cheap DIY safety rails?

I've seen squat racks built out of 2x4s. Some of the folks over on the Crossfit boards bought pairs of cheap-but-study adjustable sawhorses from Home Depot IIRC, and use those. Set them down down and you've got your place to dump weight!

Or go dig a big hole in your yard and squat in that, and then just duck out under the weight if you have to ditch, ala Paul Anderson.

I'm reminded of something I read. I think it was Paul Kelso, squatting in his back yard, and then having to cover the holes he knocked into the dirt ditching weight.

The sawhorses are probably the best solution. Not too expensive, usually rated for high weight capacity and study enough to take a heavy weight dropping on it!

If you have access to some old scaffolding you can make a nice power rack out of that. There are all kinds of ideas on the web. Try Google. Look for "homemade power rack". If you have a freind who's a machinist you could make one like this: http://redeye.co30.com/rack.html
