I have a Tanita Body Composition Monitor, but I am wondering whether I should use the body fat percentage and kg of muscle mass functions. Are these values reliable or are there other factors which can interfere thus giving an inaccurate reading?

I wouldn't bet on the reliability, because there are too many human factors that can throw bodyfat calculations off. HOWEVER, don't get rid of it. Use your first reading a a baseline, and judge your subsequent progress by the changes you recor in further readings. The Tanita may not be terribly accurate (baed on bone densities and other factors) but the readings WILL be consistent enough for you to determine any progress.

A few months ago some one posted a link to an article about BF measurement. It outlined the shortcomings and potential confounding variables of each method. My conclusion from reading the article was that no method is perfect, but that most are reliable enough for repeat measurements on a given individual to be meaningful. (Remember that "reliable" and "accurate" aren't the same thing.)

Has anyone kept track of that article?
