Mercury, like all heavy metals, gets removed at a very slow rate.

I don't believe that mercury poisoning is just a problem for kids or teens
It has bad effects on adults too and the brain mostly grow in the fetus and in the first years of life so if it were a problem for growing brains it would just be a problem for small children not kids, but actually it is known to be a problem for whatever brain not just the ones growing

Tries to eat tuna that you know contain less mercury or has been fished on less polluted waters and stick with that brand

The FDA developed it's nutritional guidelines to prevent nutrition related diseases such as scurvy back in the 1800's and has NEVER updated most of them. They are also very much financially backed by the AMA and by Drug Companies whose main focus is on corrective rather than preventative medicine. Therefore, I don't really trust much of what the FDA has to say about what I sould and shouldn't eat. I highly reccommend that anyone who is interested in finding out the truth about nutrients (vitamins and minerals) read a book called "What Your Doctor Doesn't Know About Nutritional Medicine May Be Killing You" by Dr. Ray Strand. He outlines how optimizing levels of key nutrients can help to prevent and in some cases correct many dibilitating diseases such as diabetes and cancer.

Yes, and Dr. Strand believes in limiting the consumption of mercury rich fish such as low quality tuna and swordfish
Another good book for those who like Dr Strand one is "Food Is Your Best Medice" by Dr. Henry Bieler

Recently, I've been eating a can of tuna mixed with cottage cheese every night.

Am I over doing it? or is it safe to eat a can of tuna every night?

A lot of people say they eat more than a can of tuna a day, and they don't experience any symptoms of mercury poisoning...

Maybe in the long term, it will have a dramatic effect on the individual??

I don't eat it every day, but I have 2 cans at a time. I can polish off 10 cans in about 2 weeks. I have never had a problem.

Is it safe to eat canned tuna/salmon/etc straight out of the can at room temperature without cooking it or leaving it in the frirdge beforehand?

I leave my canned seafood in the cupboard for a long time and I eat it straight out of there.

Sure, as long as the can was sealed and you just then opened it.
