I started doing Dumbbell Side Bends about a year ago and initially had pretty good results. However, I can't help but wonder if another oblique exercise might be more functional. After all how often do you have to stand stait and lean sideways to pick something up without bending at the knees or hips.

Anyway, I'm thinking of replacing side bends with either twisting crunches or twisting sit-ups, and I was wondering if any of the other members had any thoughts or suggestions on this.

Twisting and "leaning" are different movements and will likely develop you obliques differently.

I have never found it necissary to isolate a section of the abs, or even to do much direct ab work.

Twisting Crunches and Sit-ups seem to combine the twisting and leaning/side crunch functions of the obliques. I'm hoping this will allow me to kill two birds with one stone, while also allowing the abs and obliques to work together.

PS.) I also do Vertical Leg Raises (AKA Hanging Rev. Crunch) for abs. Perhaps this is overkill, but I don't want any weak links.

yes do the twisitng crunches

i think the side bends with weights are pointless

twisting jack knifes are my favorite abdominal excercise. Do as many as you can in 1 minute (usually around 24-28) and rest for 1 minute. 3 sets. That's all I do for specific abdominal work.

Side bends just seem to make my back hurt, so i dont even bother with them.

Matt, I don't do side bends. What I do notice that helps is a lot of one arm DB work, clean side press, then overhead squat it with the bell held overhead. Stuff like that. It puts the weight off center, and bends the trunk. Great overall core work, a bit out of the ordinary these days though.

I tried twishing crunches today after vertical leg raises. They seemed to work my abs as much as my obliques, which is fine with me.
