"I think serious mountaineering hiking is one of the most dangerous (where you go up things like Everest). Way worse than what you think of as dangerous (rock climbing, skydiving, etc.)" - ApolytonGP

I agree. Everest is litterally littered with the bodies of climbers who didn't make it. Could you immagine if other sports were like that. A wide reciever would have to hop over corpses on his way to the endzone.

"I think fighting bears barehanded (pun intended) is perhaps the world's most dangerous sport." - Rucifer

I had a friend who wrestled a bear once. ..... Not as cool as it sounds. It wasn't a real bear, just a big, hairy gay guy.

 That sounds even more dangerous than a grizzly or polar bear!

I was surprised recently to see MMA coverage in a newspaper (USA today).

That reminds me, I've been meaning to ask whether anyone (specifically pdellorto) saw Lesner/Carwin. Awesome fight. But I was wondering on the arm triangle whether Carwin could have lifted his right leg up to his chest and then grabbed the back of his right knee with his left hand. That would pull his left arm down more. Wouldn't that have taken the pressure off his neck, allowing air/blood to flow? It seemed like he had plenty of time to try.

Frogbyte, I didn't see the fight yet. When I do, I'll comment. But I'm having a hard time visualizing how I'd make an arm triangle looser by grabbing my knee. I'll try it in class, though, and my coach has seen the fight.

Aw - k. Sadly I can't find a picture of the finish, but it was an arm triangle with Brock's left arm over the throat, his right arm locked in behind, and Brock gave up mount to rotate off to his right (Carwin's left) side. Carwin's left arm was sticking out from in the triangle with some degree of maneuverability at first.

this thread disappoints. I was hoping it was going to be a thread about MMA fighting, as apposed to a thread about watching other people do it.

Ive contemplated many times getting into it myself, but the training costs are a little steep for me right now.

Still haven't asked my coach, I keep forgetting...

Anyway, tonight at 6:30 pm and tomorrow at 6:00 pm New Breed Fighters is streaming live amateur MMA. One guy from Advanced Fighting Systems (my gym) on the card tonight, 3 tomorrow including a title fight.

http://www.newbreedfighters.tv/

In case you're interested. Look on the fight card for "AFS Team Asylum" and you'll find my friends.

Where's the footage of -you- though?

(I need to find somebody that will let me put an arm triangle choke on them for science.)

There's an old SHOOTO fight of mine up on my youtube channel:

http://www.youtube.com/user/pdellorto

I'm laughably out of shape though, and I am a walking, punching technical errors video. My Grappler's Quest videos and a video of me doing my sparring evaluation from my kendo shodan test are up there too. I long ago lost my first kendo tournament's video, though, and no one recorded the other ones...

I'm too lazy right now to pull the other SHOOTO videos out of the DVDs they got recorded on and then upload them. This one was handy in avi format, once I finally remembered where I put the drive I'd stored them on.

I'd like to see BJ Penn fight Matt Serra ... That could be a good fight.

When I was younger I got a lot of instructional tapes from Panther. Some of my favorites were the Ruas Vale Tudo series with Marco Ruas (and Pedro Rizo).

Ruas teaches an interesting method of closing the distance. Rather than lowering his level, and THEN shooting in like a wrestler, Ruas does both in one movement. He uses the same basic method whether he's attacking an opponents legs or closing to a body clinch.
