My massage therapist says it's definitely not before a workout, but is right after one a good time, or do the muscles need time to adapt to the workout before massaging them?

Well, I used to live in B'ham but no longer. I had a "Ashi" massage yesterday. Ashi means foot in Japanese. The longer name is Ashiatsu massage. It involves the masseuse holding on to rails on the ceiling so she can modulate the foot pressure she puts on your back, including legs. Quite an experience.

My massages are anything but relaxing and i'd say if they are relaxing then he/she isnt doing much anything to the muscle. Just had my legs massaged for the first time in life full 60mins of pain and swearing. He is dealing with both regular people and professional athletes and he recommended me to take atleast 2 days off before working out the muscles that are massaged and atleast 1 recovery day before coming to a massage because otherwise it might be harder to achieve the same results if the patient cant handle the pain. Im inclined to agree to this because your muscles will be needlessly tight after a workout so taking 1-2 days recovery and stretching and then going to massage will yeild better results just for the fact that people cant handle the pain.

Yea, deep tissue is a whole different thing. I don't think most people need that. It does seem to be of benefit to some though.
