It's funny, I grew up with this knowledge. I recently took a beginner handgun course, and the one thing these "instructors" tried to drill in was inhale a deep breath, and exhale is all. I was like "wait, wut?'

Yea I hear a lot of supposed things for which there is no evidence.

I promise you in 2016 nothing will have happened, and there will be a new scare about gun bans by the next Democrat who runs.

I still think it's unwise to become too complacent.

Well we might be struck by lightening too.

I think Matt is referring to their short discussion on automatic weapons. I think it was in the 2nd debate (?) or the third? I only saw those two.

I did a search on the transcripts but didn't find anything... which is weird because I remember Romney saying, "There is already a ban on automatic weapons (rifles)."

I didn't mention the murder rate, i mentioned the murder rate by firearm. I know it's a complicated issue and that there is no one single factor which underpins it all, but i do think it's striking that all the so called inudustrialised nations, bar the US, have strict gun control laws and all have very low murder rates by firearm. The US in comparison which doesn't have as strict gun control laws has a significantly higher murder rate by firearm.

People likely to be murdered protect themselves with guns. All I have to ponder about is why people use tragedy to enforce a worldview that makes others unsafe.

A) Wouldn't one naturally assume some relationship between the total murder rate and the rate of firearms-related murders.

B) For me at least, the total murder rate is the more important statistic. Dead is dead. What offends you more, the fact that someone was murdered, or the fact that the killer happened to use a firearm?

There's about a 90% correlation.

It's interesting that in countries that have a lot of guns, like US, Canada, Switzerland, the number of firearm suicides is higher than firearm homicides.

Makes sense when you think about it ... A bullet to the brain is about as quick and painless a method as I can think of.

However, reducing access to firearms wouldn't neccissarily reduce the total suicide rate. I'm pretty sure the suicide rate in Japan is higher than that of the US.
