 Post subject: Clavicle pain

I get a pain around my clavicle bone when I do machine dips or any barbell bench presses. I never got them doing dumb bell presses. Sometimes I am able to feel the pain when pressing on the muscles located near/behind the clavicle that are around my neck

Advice is greatly appreciated because I am an avid gym goer and don't want to fall back if I don't need to.

If the pain is moderate to severe, see a doctor, preferably one who has a sports medicine background. Don't waste time trying to get a medical diagnosis over the Internet

Sorry. There's no way to try to give you a diagnosis, even for those with medical training, without examining you in person. Sorry, that's just the way it is.

Try just backing off a bit on the lifts that bother you. If the pain goes away, try gradually increasing again. If it doesn't go away, or if it comes again later, see a doctor.

Where do you live? Are there no free clinics around?

This is by no means medical advice, but something for you to consider:

Make sure that your shoulders are down from your ears. Some people have the tendency to bench press and dip with a shrugged shoulder position. It happens much less with dumbbell presses.

Just curious - is your neck tight? Do you work at a job where you spend a lot of time looking at a computer monitor?

I think I will run a couple trial weeks spending time concentrating on keeping my shoulders down in both cases. I fear concentrating on what my shoulders are doing when benching might be hard. That could very much be the case. I may as well lower the weight by maybe 10-20% to adjust.

My neck isn't tight really... I dot work a desk job, but I do spend about 2 hours a day average on the computer.

I've had this pain. I found it was due to dips, don't know why. I stopped doing them and eventually the pain went away, it did take a while though.

I'd caution us all about concluding that a poster's symptoms are due to the same issue as pain that one of us may have had. Even if the symptoms sound very familiar, it's impossible to know if it's the same issue without someone knowledgeable examining both parties. Just sayin. Advice about good exercise form, or caution to cut out exercises that are know to be troublesome is great.

Fair enough Doc.

I've had a extremely similar pain to the one the OP describes. Using a process of elimination I found that it was dips which caused the aggravation.
