I'm looking for advice on different types of massage and am trying to find a certain type that will benefit me the most.

I'm mostly looking for massage that gives results, and eases chronic tension - I don't mind pain or discomfort during massages

I have been to a myotherapist, and have also had dry needling from a physio. I also do SMR with foam rollers and spikey balls.

Any advice/recommendations would be much appreciation, as well as things to avoid.

I would say first look at the possible psychological factors that may be contributing to your chronic tension. But the rest I can't really offer too much advice. Good luck in your searches.

I consider doing self massage doing it 2x/day everyday 100x more effective than going once per month by doing it someone else. (no offense for people who work there) I actually abandoned it completely.

One can argue if self massage is as effective but it works wonders for me. If you bother stretch/massage everyday, that's all you need. Going real massage therapist it takes me only 3 days and I want another massage as my training is very intense. I also feel I can add way more intensity than any massage therapist and I can adjust it for myself how I like it.

I use 100% of time spikey ball/regular ball. I lean against wall and pushing with legs for pressure. After that I start to do my silly "dance". Moving my hips from left to right, something I wouldn't dare put on youtube. It's extremely nice by doing your side going deep into your Guadratus lumborum. I massage all muscles from arms, chest, whole back, shoulders, thighs

Only hamstrings and calves I do on floor but again with ball. But I also do my whole back in floor with ball if I want to add intensity. I start with wall though.

I consider foam rollers horrible so not using as much. (they're decent for front thighs)

This doesn't answer your question at all, but I gave insight how I do it and that it works for me.

Thanks for the replies.

I agree with the self massage. I really just wanted to go to help me see what i need to work on. It definitely is costly though.

I'll have another attempt at the spikey ball and try to work it around some of the muscles the foam roller has trouble reaching.
