Passive Shoulder External Rotation

Passive Shoulder External Rotation Assessment

Stand or sit. Position bent arm up to side; elbow bent shoulder height with wrist above elbow. Administrator stands at side of subject and grasps subject's elbow and wrist.

Administrator keeps subject's elbow directly lateral to subject's shoulder while gently pulling wrist back until tightness is felt or subject expresses slight discomfort. Repeat with opposite arm.

Wrist should be able to travel slightly behind frontal plane of shoulder. The distance wrist travels behind shoulder or range of motion is noted for each side.

Administrator must keep elbow squarely lateral to shoulder for consistent assessment protocol. Note any pain or discomfort during movement. See Shoulder External Rotation Inflexibility.
