TIME- "Exercise Myth: why exercise won't make you thin.

what a horrible message. there are elements of truth to it, but it is very misleading to the lay person.

Well alright then, complex carbs it is. Lately I've been drinking a lot of orange juice and fruit punch between meals as a shortcut for extra calories, but I guess I'll just have to start eating more rice and pasta.

Re: Is this a good product?

3 lbs for "only $35?" That, sir, is a bit of a rip off. And that's not really a weight gainer, it's protein powder with a crapload of sugar in it. 5mg of creatine is negligble too, since it's about 1% of an effective dose. I personally wouldn't trust a product from an obscure foreign brand like that...

Probably a dumb question...why eat complex carbs?

I am trying to bulk up cleanly. From what I understand eating plenty of carbs is necessary basically to prevent muscle catalysis. But why "complex carbs like pasta, brown rice, fruits, etc?" Complex carbs break down to glucose slower than foods with high glycemic index, but couldn't you just constan...

Re: Training Hip Flexors

Hmm now that you mention it I don't specifically train them either. They aren't exactly a muscle group many routines seem to focus on. I would think hanging leg raises are probably enough.

Wait, you are saying that fitness equipment companies exaggerate the benefits of using their equipment and people don't really need the equipment to get in shape? What a revolutionary idea. The fitness business is just that, a business. There's always been scams like this.

I would take it as soon as possible after working out. Although it is also important to eat sugar right after working out.

I'm also interested in hearing about gloves, belts, chalk, etc. I can't find any good info on them. I personally only use a belt on rare occasions, like for a set of less than 6 reps. I also use wrist straps for pull-ups, dead-lifts and shoulder shrugs. I never really saw the purpose of gloves since...

Re: I can't do full squats

Partial squats aren't bad for the knees if you do them properly. Are you sure your lower back is strong enough for squats? Seems like the best thing you could do is just use less weight.

Re: sucky posture - please help

It's hard to give advice since we really don't know what kind of posture we're working with here. If you really want a good assessment of your posture, and you're not shy, take a picture of yourself in front and profile views. Make sure to stand in front of a plumb line (a string with a weight at th...

Re: Help with routine please.

Squats. You'll burn many more calories squatting than doing any other exercise and they're great for leg development.

Cycling probably isn't going to build you much leg muscle. I know a cyclist with huge legs but he does a lot of intense 4-5 hour rides up hills and such.

First, you should get yourself a bench and a barbell. Then make your routine more balanced, so that it emphasizes legs, back and chest instead of just arms and shoulders. If you're only training your arms, you're really limiting your overall progress. You'll end up with unnatural distributions of st...

I used to work out in the morning and it definitely has it's cons as well as pros. It's nice to have a gym to yourself and to get that extra time later in the day, but I found that I was usually somewhat dehydrated and had less energy in the morning. I also felt like it was such a rigorous schedule ...

I've never heard of caffeine thinning the blood, but it does stimulate glycogen catabolism and some of its metabolites even stimulate lypolysis (fat breakdown and release into the blood). Caffeine is usually the only effective ingredient in all of those diet pills, so save yourself the money and jus...

That routine isn't bad. Although I think you should do something for your hamstrings and lower back. Lunges and squats are both primarily quads and glutes. If you feel like you're at a plateau and you aren't improving, consider changing things around. Since your BF% is near 30%, your biggest improve...
