Vacuums, etc.

I meant to bring up the question about vacuums, and also hang-gut (at least I thought that was the term, but searching online I found nothing). So, the consensus is vacuums are moderately helpful -- any guidelines on how long, how often? The other thing I'm taking away is the totality of posture -- ...

Onlyethic - I think you just need to stick with it. Making any real postural changes can be quite a frustrating process. I think true changes take quite a while. Especially if you still have to spend a lot of time sitting down. I think some of the best advice i've heard is "learn how to fidget". If...

Fair enough. I had been focusing on this--standing tall, sitting tall--after an upper back spasm. Felt I had learned my lesson, but obviously not completely since I've slacked off (literally). I focused for quite a while on KPj's earlier advice, to stretch the hell out of my upper quads and strength...

Sucking It In

I've asked some questions about this topic, and got some answers touching on it, but figured worth a direct query. I've noticed throughout the day, sitting, standing, whatever else, that my abs aren't just slack but that I'm inadvertently pushing them out. It kills my posture, pulls my torso downwar...

It sounds like everything you think is irrelevant (tail bone) or maybe-relevant (pillow, deadlifts) is almost certainly very relevant. The tailbone thing might be forcing you to sit bolt-upright, but if you don't have proper development across the back (particularly in mid-back), obliques, and trans...

Thanks. Right...I sort of whitewashed the "hyper" out of your comment, KPJ, about hyperextensions and took it as just extensions. But, point taken. The sidebend point makes sense. Thinking about the mechanics of it, it now seems ill-advised. I'll stay away. As for the squat, it's just yet another ca...

Some follow up

I've been trying to integrate all this. I got into Neanderthal No More on TNation, read about tightness of the psoas, and, of course, the ubiquitous anterior pelvic tilt. I've been doing the Neanderthal program, also getting back into squatting. I feel like front squats will help many of my issues (...

Massive back attack

Three days ago, I sat down at my desk and felt a tightness creep up my back and onto my traps, as if someone was gripping them. A few seconds later, the tightness amplified, then became a crippling, stabbing pain near my scapula, on the right side, radiating across most of my back. That day was done...

I re-read the comment on push-pull ratio -- seem to have misunderstood it the first time. You meant by 1:2 or 1:3 the ratio of work sets, not the weight -- I think?

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I've been meaning to do some of this, particularly the hips stretching. I do dynamic hip stretches before and static after, but maybe need to switch to band work. I'll try that. I'll start on the 100 thoracic extensions, KPj. Fact is, I've been lazy about my foam r...

Lower back pop-out

Hi, Was wondering if anyone can advise on how to correct my lower back -- actually more accurately, mid-back-- rounding out when I sit. There is definitely weakness there. I've been working squats and deadlifts, pullups with complete ROM, and some rows to pull my shoulders back. But still, the postu...

the date on the label says 09/09. clearly plenty of time. i guess what concerns me is the white, milky swirl that floats on top (in addition to very bad taste). think this might indicate something, aside from paranoia?

also a simple suggestion: get her biking one or two days a week. this has the advantage of working cardio endurance without the injury risk of her running while she's still working on gpp and getting to an injury-prevention level. plus, biking is much more fun and doable for most people than running.
