In the powerlifting world, they also train for explosive power. You lower the weight and then push/pull through the exercise as fast as possible. This is often done for sport specific training as well as to help you break through a sticking point in your heavy lifts. It’s called Plyometrics. Not to ...

It’s a great exercise, and I like to use it from time to time. At the start of the movement, it really stresses the anterior delts almost like a DB Front Raise. As you begin the rotation, you call more of the lateral delts into play. It’s like two exercises in one: a DB Front Raise to isolate the an...

Also, Cross Fit and Kettlebell training is brutal. In discussing kettlebell training with someone once they told me the could have me puking in 10 minu Last week, Stronglifts took a look at CrossFit and how you might be able to use it in a 5x5 strength program. First he discussed what he liked abou...

Just remembered about this Paul Kelso interview by Mike Roberston a few weeks ago, http://www.robertsontrainingsystems.com/newsletter/june302008.htm KPj Thanks KPj! In that article he says: But, none of my books are for beginners; they assume at least basic training experience on the part of the re...

Ok. It’s just that when you said: This "contraction" is made up of a certain amount of motor units ( not to be confused with muscle fibers ). It seemed you might be confused about what a motor unit is as you clearly state a motor unit is not to be confused with muscle fiber. On the contrary, a motor...

If I’m reading Kelso right, he is suggesting a sort of “forced rep” past the point of volitional failure. That is, you would do the exercise such as the Bent Row first for the regular number of reps to failure, then do the shrug movement at the end. The idea being that you have exhausted the primary...

Thanks for the info Tim! I’ve not heard of the Kelso Shrug System. Seems a bit odd to me....can you give a brief explanation of the premise? Kind of like how doing Squats enhances muscular growth in your upper body due to greater GH produced in Squats. I found this on the net. Because the arms and o...

Ah, thanks for the further explanation. No, doing that wouldn’t help much at all. In a Pull-Up, you need strong Lats, mid Traps, and Biceps. The movement you describe wouldn’t make you any stronger in a Pull-Up movement, but you would get stronger in that particular Shrug movement. The Push-Up movem...

The 9-12 rep range is the ideal range for Hypertrophy (increase in muscle size). Once you get to 8 reps or below, there is a shift to strength gains more so than Hypertrophy. Above 12 reps, and you're getting into endurance.
Here is a link that talks about the rep ranges.

I don’t think I fully understand your question since each of the exercises you listed requires the arms to bend at the elbows and will require articulation of the shoulder. If your wife is having problems completing a desired exercise, especially a body weight movement, there are many ways around th...

I don’t think so. A motor unit is a 2 piece package. It is a single motor neuron and all of the muscle fibers it innervates. The eye for example has motor units composed of one motor neuron and 10 or so muscle fibers. Large motor units have a single motor neuron and up to 2,000 or more muscle fibers...

You can usually look and see the difference between special technique and clueless. Dan John’s “Power Curl” was a Power Clean with a reverse grip. He started from the floor at first, and then went down to the ankles (RDL height). Al Oerter was doing a reverse grip Hang Clean, and has been credited w...

I think the biggest upside is fat burning. Studies have shown that in fasted individuals, free fatty acid concentrations are much higher, and fat oxidation is greatly increased. The downside is performance is decreased, and you are in a catabolic state meaning you are tearing down your muscles. Stud...
