The daily gripper work won't cause overtraining. Maybe sore hands/forearms, maybe lack of progress from inadequate muscle recovery, but not overtraining. Yeah, I didn't mean to imply it would. I just used that as a really clear example that something was wrong. However, doing multiple compound move...

Is this overtraining?

I have a hard time believing that I'm in an overtrained state, particularly after a long break during the holidays which was followed-up by a nasty cold. Thanks to the cold & holidays, tn the last 30 days, I've worked out 17 days. I typically work compound movements in the 6-10 rep range to failure....

Re: being made fun of for weight

I like how ive progressed with weight and i can lift so much more especially squat more than a lot of meatheads and big guys at the gym. I mean I always hear people talking about small people and the wei...

One thing to keep in mind is that *anything* done by someone new to exercise is going to yield positive results. To that end, I'd be inclined to go for whatever she finds enjoyable, safe, and comfortable.

I'd aim for compound movements with dumbbells. I'd focus on form and maintaining motivation.

Prilepin's Table: Have I misunderstood this?

Just to give some background information (copied from another resource online): "During the '60s and '70s Soviet sports scientist A.S.Prilepin collected data from the training logs of more than 1000 World, Olympic, National and European weightlifting champions. Prilepin synthesized his findings in a...

Kenny,

What's your opinion on the reverse hyper machine?

As a welder, I was thinking of building my own.

"Drills for training the stretch-shortening cycle should not be limited to drop jumps, though often they are. The possibility of increasing the mass of the falling body is rather limited in drop jumps - people wear weight vests or belts, but these cannot be as heavy, for example, as 100kg. In view o...

My 20s was one big fight. I used to go out every night expressly looking for a fight. My favorite past time was to do whatever I could to get someone to take the first swing. That way I felt justified in beating their ass. Yeah, I was a pretty big jerk then. Last fight I got into, guy grabbed...

I've been back at the gym for 7 months now after nearly 10 years off due to a very bad back injury. Despite putting up great numbers 10 years ago, I've experienced significant detraining and gained a ton of bodyfat. Here are my goals for 2011: Squat 2x My Bodyweight. Currently just over 1.5 Bench pr...

At Westside, they typically use 50% of 1RM for Speed Day and they generally do about 8 sets of 2 reps. They also do a pause on the box and explode up - again because the point of the work on that day is to train the body to generate Force, not to get stronger. This is one of the things people have ...

You can use a box for - Box Squats, squatting to a box, and "tap and go" to gauge depth... In "Box Squats" you're striving for a vertical shin so, you sit back as far as possible - the movement is all hips, it's just "back, back, back," with no "down". Your knees should barely move forward, if at a...
