Re: How do I become a personal trainer? I have no idea!

I got the NASM cert and I've been a trainer for 6 years now. My advice would be look at all the places you would potentially work and see what certs they want. A trainer cert is like passing your driving test - you start really learning after you've passed the test. All the cert really does is teach...

Re: Where's Doc been, and what's he been up to?

Andy - sorry to hear about the problems you've been having. Been a while since I posted, I check in from time to time and have a scan through the forum but times gotten away from me recently. I don't have any experience with your condition but recently have worked with or currently still training cl...

Re: Random crap

I actually bumped into him last summer-ish. Think it was August / September. I was attending a layne norton workshop and training day and Bob worked at the gym that was hosting it! Small world. hopefully he's still workin there, was/is a great gym. I need to see if I still have his number, always wa...

I still check in occasionally. Been crazy busy recently though and the weeks and months have been getting away from me.

Hope you're all well and staying strong

Re: That question about lower back initiating deadlift

As an example, I use the following cue with one of my clients, "tickle monster" Not sure what research would have to say about this, but for her it gets her lats right, keeps the bar closer, and allows her to lift more (she pulls over double b/w.... and "used to" have lower back pain - but not anymo...

Re: That question about lower back initiating deadlift

"pushing the floor away" allows for a tighter starting position and therefore better start to lift in "some" lifters. I don't think this will necessarily change the muscle firing sequence - this is the point i attempted to make. If it does i'd be ok with that if it meant a safer and stronger pull. A...

Re: That question about lower back initiating deadlift

For me to put much importance on that data i'd need to see other variables somehow accounted for. Leverages play a big part in someones deadlift style which I reckon could change things, and actual technique must play a part i.e a sloppy lift with no tightness, hips shooting up, back rounding vs a c...

Re: Long Rambling Screed About 5/3/1

It may not of been completely useless for your squat and deadlift. I'm not particularly for or against 5-3-1, as you've pointed out the best approach is generally individual. However, sometimes we need to step back from what we're doing now and consider what we've done recently before deciding what ...

Re: DeadLift always gives Hip pains.

It's really interesting... Ive actually ended up going separate ways with a training partner because we didn't really see eye to eye in this.... Was always a constant struggle between me insisting on better form with less weight, and her stubbornness to always want to lift more. Still very good frie...

Re: DeadLift always gives Hip pains.

For the OP - It would be interesting to see how you felt if you reduced all the squatting. Squatting is hip "stress", too. Deadlifting may just be the straw that breaks the camels back, total stress could be more like the issue. Other than that, common causes are not locking the weight out with the ...

Re: DeadLift always gives Hip pains.

Right now i'm deadlifting twice per week :headbang: I've spent a lot of my deadlifting "career" pulling twice per week, too. Honestly, though, I don't know many people that train the deadlift like me. I don't mean in terms of frequency, but in terms of load used in training and technique. My best de...

Re: Random crap

I'm still on the fence with biosig. Our MD and many of the regional managers love it and use it and encourage us all to get certified in it, although worth saying they don't force us and seem to be quite encouraging of us going our own way with this stuff. The MD says, "this is what I do, and what h...

Re: Random crap

Our new owners have a really interesting way of running it. It's basically run by 2 companies. There's the gym, then the PT company, who contracts out trainers who are self employed (like myself). The gym itself made all reception and sales staff (apart from one sales manager) redundant. None of the...

Re: Random crap

My gym is current going through a complete refurb. It's interesting. I joined the gym as a member and newbie about 8 years ago. At that time, the free weights area was tiny. One half rack, 2 DB benches, some DB's, a bench press, and smith, all crammed into a space you would struggle to park your car...

I'm still around, check in once or twice a week actually, it's just going through a quiet phase, really.

Good to see you back! Sorry to hear you've had some troubles and hope things are ok now.
