Re: Rep range & other stuff for old goat...
Why don't you try taking a look at Eric Cressey's Neanderthal No More series? I find it's a very malleable program that's great foundational and strength work for older clients. Someone earlier also mentioned Alwyn Cosgrove, and I'm a big fan of New Rules of Lifting by Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove...

Re: Lifting in the morning
While there's some promising research on peri-workout nutrition, a lot of what's out there is just bro-science that's not backed up by a whole lot of actual research (IE the whole 1-2 hour anabolic window). The bottom line is that the most important factor regarding meal timing and nutrient partiti...

If taking a pill or a shot was the difference between making all of your dreams that you've worked your entire life for come true or washing dishes on the night shift for minimum wage, what would you choose?

Re: The case for direct arm work. or not. Here we go again
This is just an abstract. A lot of questions are not being answered: 1. What was the set/rep scheme? 2. Cadence? 3. Load? 4. Progression? All of which could invalidate the findings, and these are the kinds of questions we'd be asking a person posting for program feedback. We wouldn't have enough inf...

Re: Random crap
Today at the gym I saw a guy doing box jumps with a barbell on his back. Instead of a plyo box (we have two) he was using a bench. He lifted the bar off a rack facing outwards, took a wide stance, did a quarter squat with his knees caving inwards, and jumped, landing on the bench in front of him wi...

Re: Looking for good physiotherapy websites and books.
Kelly Starrett Gray Cook Eric Cressey These guys are probably the best/most well known physiotherapists that deal with the athletic and strength populations, and have authored books or video seminars. Additionally Minnesota State University has a Student Practical Assessment Teaching Aid website tha...

Re: Should You Always Use Full ROM?
Outside of a single-joint exercise it's almost impossible to define what full ROM even means. Deadlifts are from the floor at the height of 1/2 of the diameter of a 45lb plate because tradition. Squats below parallel on a short legged and long torso'd individual are radically different from a person...

Re: coaching the deadlift
I agree with Kenny. Or Ken? Wait, isn't everbody in here Ken, except for Oscar? The fastest way to fix a technical weakness in a major lift is to correct the weakness. Weak can't be cued. Conventional deadlifting at the world-class level will almost certainly require upper back rounding to "hang" of...

Re: too weak for Chest dip/Pull ups
I actually think that the pulldown could well be better than chins/pull ups for building muscle. Just my musings, but I know that I did chins for years without much growth in my lats at all (although I got ok at doing chins I guess...), and since switching to pulldowns my lats are growing much fast...

I just buy little accounting ledgers. They're like $6, they fit in my back pocket and they've got 100 pages each.
