Re: What makes a set of planks

I've tried using plates without a partner, but it's hard for me to stack 'em. If I want to add more weight, I'll use a smith rack. The one we've got doesn't go near enough to the ground, so I'll set up a pair of benches to get a bit of extra height.

I don't remember the reference offhand (let me know if you really want me to dig it up), but bosu ball training and other unstable balance training doesn't improve single leg balance (and in fact impairs it). However, training single leg balance with your eyes closed does improve "normal" single leg...

Are there any studies that have shown this to be effective? There was a summary of a decade of research that came up negative [1], but that's two years old, and I've been hearing a lot of hype about vision training the past couple of years. [1] Wile, A. L., Doan, B. K., Brothers, M. D., & Zupan, M. ...

I tried Vibrams, and they disintegrated really quickly for me (< 100 mi of mild running before a small tear appeared, and < 300 mi before they weren't usable at all anymore). Lots of my friends like 'em, though, so it's probably just that I have feet that aren't the right shape for Vibrams.

Ab rollouts are great! I prefer doing them on rings vs. on an actual ab roller though, because it's easy to adjust the difficulty: all you have to do is change where you position your feet. With an ab roller, if you can't do full extensions, you have to go from your knees (which is probably way too ...

I get around this by just eating the protein powder without water, when I'm too lazy to prepare a real meal.

If you liked that book, you'll probably like The Art of Choosing. It covers the same subject, but it's more recent, so it has more recent research. It focuses more on the research, and less on telling stories, i.e., it's less Malcolm Gladwell-ish than How We Decide.

I'm a grad student (until the end of the month), so I'm involved in research, but it's machine learning/statistical design stuff, so I don't have any particular expertise in health/kinesiology/epidemiology issues. I just happen to have been reading a lot about, umm, geriatric health recently because...

Peter's blog is awesome! I don't have a copy of the book, so I don't know which studies Biomarkers refers to, but here's a list of recent research from Tufts on aging and muscle mass (all of which is too recent to have made it into Biomarkers). Just from skimming the abstracts of those studies, and ...

5'8", 135 now; 115 at my lowest. My scale seems to be off by about 5 lbs, so that might really be 140/120. Even so, I'm a lightweight :-).

there is no link between dietary cholestrol and blood cholestrol and the link between blood cholestrol and heart disease is suspect. Uh wow how you'd get below 4% without even knowing it? I need to get on your routine. Hah! My routine is pretty lame, compared to most people on this board. I always do some sort of row, some sort of press, some sort of squat, deadlift, plus miscellaneous shoulder stability and core exercises that ...

I asked the question earlier, and maybe it just sounded like I was being my usual sarcastic self, and didn't sound like a serious question. I really don't understand the utility of BF measurement. What difference does it make? Sorry for reviving a dead thread, but finding out my BF% was useful for ...

I do weighted sit-ups, but I don't think I get anywhere near the same ROM on my hip flexors for those. This probably doesn't matter much now that I don't play ultimate anymore, but my old motivation for doing hip flexor exercises was so that I could get my knees up quickly while sprinting.
