Exercise selection for hypertrophy

Are exercises that include a stretch of the targeted muscles and have the sticking point in a more stretched position generally more effective for hypertrophy? I know there is some evidence that isometrics in a stretched position beat isometrics in a shortened position, but not sure what conclusions...

My understanding is that the leaner you are, the harder it is to preserve muscle while losing weight.

Leg extensions don't put much stress on your back, I am curious if there may be something else that stressed out your back. If the pain now only occurs while you are doing leg extensions I would expect that this is related to you being hyper vigilant (you mentioned that you stretch and foam roll on ...

Also just because I tense up my calves during a max BP doesn't mean my calves are doing anything to move the weight. without some context I can't tell what is indicated by that chart.

But you need strong lats to bench more. Usually strong lats = bigger lats. So don't neglect it! In the bottom of the bench press, your shoulders are so flexed, the lats are one big factor to get the starting strength you need to get to get out of the hole and get the bar off from your chest.
