Get involved in martial arts. I had the same posture during my adolescence and early teens. Learning a martial art not only improves your posture, it's fun and builds your self-esteem. Many kids that I hung out with in the 60's pursued martial arts and weight training at the same time. Some became n...

IRONMAN: I share your disgust towards the personal trainers who clutter the gym with so many rubber and foam appliances, that it looks like an adult toy store. Wielding their weekend workshop certifications, these personal pimps disguise their incompetence with this array of props, much like the mag...

I don't know about power lifting, but genetics definitely rule in bodybuilding. Take Bob Paris or Frank Zayne or Arnold S., for example: they looked far better than any of the freakish bullfrog mutations you see on the pro circuit these days, drugs or no drugs. The words aesthetic, semetry, and prop...

I appologize for those foam hula hoops. They belonged to a personal trainer who tried to bring clients into our gym, and he never came back to claim them. We do have a WABDL 5-time-masters world champ (power lifter) in our ranks, as well as some successful bodybuilders.

Let's See your Dungeon

I'm fortunate to have a real gym in our small, depressed mill town, minus the television sets and soccer moms running on treadmills. We affectionately refer to it as "The House of Pain." It's three stories up in an old industrial building. Last night, I headed down for some arm and back work and sho...

Great site...makes me wish the internet existed when my interest in weight training started. The amount of information that can be accessed today is incredible. Thanks for that link!

RARE Grimek/Hoffman film clip

You need to get your glutes over to YOUTUBE and catch two film pieces showing the great John Grimek posing and lifting, as well as Bob Hoffman doing a bent-arm press. I met Grimek in 1969, and he was still a bad ass as he neared the age of 70. His physque and strength were a tribue to genetics and d...

Thanks for your kind words, TimD and Ironman. I didn't mean to go off on a tirade, but you made some clear points about they way we grew up, compared to now. In our town, every other basement had a set of weights in it. A kid I lifted with had made dumbells using coffee cans and cement. We had a lat...

Just lift, bro. That's more than most fat-assed Americans are doing. Did you know that our children are expected to have shorter lives than we? Historically, that's the first time this has been predicted. Think about it...with our modern medicines and scientific advancements, how can this be true? A...

Grunting at the Gym

At the gym I train in, the owner posts intimidating signs on the wall, refering to bodybuilders as "muscleheads." Some of the messages are somewhat threatening and about replacing weights, not grunting. We are free to groan, grunt, and praise the Lord at our gym without objections. Hey, that's Ameri...

Barbell Drag Curls

On another forum, IronOnline, I saw a video of Vince Gironda giving instruction for the drag curl. I'd like to try doing these curls, but I'm not sure if the video shows the correct form. Has anyone done these and, if so, can you provide some detail on the execution? Where are the elbows supposed to...

Wouter: Sounds like something I do at the cable cross-over machine for rear delts. I use a slightly inclined bench and position it between two high pullys. I cross my arms (slightly bent) over my chest and grap the two opposite D-handles to pull the weight stacks on each side.

Nutritional Advice

If you can get it, Gold's Gym Nutrition Bible is excellent, even though it was published some time ago. It does a good job of examining nutrition from a bodybuilder's perspective. Added benefit: My photo is in it.
