Sore heel

Sounds like it might be Plantar Fasciitis to me. I had that. Untreated it can get to be very painful. Fortunately you can treat it pretty easily, by stretching or rolling your heel on a golf ball. In my case I think it was caused by my doing Calf Raises on a flat surface, I wasn't stretching down fa...

Thanks Ryan. I actually think that is the very page I was quoting stuff from (ie "More [than 1] sets may elicit slightly greater strength gains but additional improvement is relatively small.") But then several folks (I think including you? lol) said the guidelines were updated and now recommend mor...

Well the main difference is that pushups will really work your whole body (including core muscles), whereas bench press and the like are more focused on chest, shoulders and arms. So it sort of depends what you are going for. As others have said, they are different, no reason not to do both...

Periodization?

For some reason (* see below) I've gotten into the habit of doing a light (warmup) set (15 reps), followed by a medium set (8-12 reps), followed by a heavy set (3-6 reps). Is there a name for this? Is this a recommended way to workout? Or is it better to do standard periodization where you pick one ...

...when you do the opposing motion you enhance the recovery of the opposing muscles. the way I think of it is you want to work both sides of the same movement... Dips, body moves vertically. (Push) / Chin-Ups, body moves vertically. (Pull) I'm probably nit-picking a bit (lol) but wouldnt an Upright...

Thanks to Tim and Ryan and everyone else for the comments and info. I wonder why they (ExRx web owners) don't update the site if the ASCM and others have officially changed their positions? Oh well. Anyway, I appreciate all the expertise, thanks again...

Ryan You seem like a very knowledgable guy and what you say makes sense. Still, if I were designing a program with only 1 shoulder exercise, I would follow the advice of the experts that created this site: Only one deltoid selection is necessary. A Side Deltoid selection is recommended since Front D...

This program makes sure that I'm targeting every part of my shoulder, and putting extra emphasis on my biceps, which are lagging behind. Charlie I didnt say I think you need to explicitly work every part of your shoulder. In fact since chest and back exercises work the shoulder already you can real...

Well, first of all, you quoted me completely out of context since I immediately followed that up with push/pull across a joint. Ryan Sorry it looked that way. I said "I'm sure thats not what you meant." I was just trying to give an example of a badly balanced push / pull. My bad... At any rate, I a...

This is a good beginner routine. Later you can and most likely will do more sets. Lol, you guys keep assuming I am a beginner . I'm not. I've lifted on and off for more than 30 years. I've probably tried every new idea that came down the pike in that time. I've added more weight and more sets more ...
