The reasoning behind eating veggies in the morn. is that they are low cal, have fiber, and am trying to get the 9 servings in. Now that I think of it (I've been trying to forget!) I ate bowls of miso, soba noodles, steamed veggies and adzuki beans for breakfast - and several other times during the ...

Frank: Get an adjustable dumbbell set at Walmart, the kind with spin-lock handles that accept 2 1/2, 5, & 10 lb. plates. Then, you're using real weights with exercises that can gradually stretch and strengthen those tendons and ligaments. Using bodyweight for exercise is also safe and excellent. I ...

Hello, have you veterans got any good advice for those who haven't got much experience in lifting (such as myself). This advice could be about how to keep healthy joints, ligaments and tendons. 1 - Pay attention to your body. Do NOT ignore pain. If you have pain that lasts more than a week or two, ...

Do you use the Smith machine when you're bench pressing? For safety's sake I'd recommend it, or, just use very light dumbbells until your back gets better. As for diet, seeing a professional can't hurt. I went once, and it opened my eyes to a few things. But my first rule is this: just don't eat ju...

Frank It might be a good idea for you to consult a registered dietitian about setting up a meal plan for you. Perhaps your doctor or health care plan can help you in finding one. The advantage of following an official dietitian plan rather than my unofficial advice is that it gives you cover if you...

Stu, You are young at 50!

Frank, I'm beginning to feel young at 50. You should try to do some back exercises, even if it's unweighted. If you have a bad back there is probably a reason and that's probably not using it enough. Take it slow and keep progressing. As you progress, full body 3 times a week will probably be ok bu...

I can't do set ups, but was wondering if i could try just tightening up my gut mussels (isometric?) while holding them in, then releasing them etc? Maybe do it while i'm walking on my walking days? Frank, here are some lower back exercises: http://www.pennhealth.com/health_info/lowbackpain/lowbackp...

Very good advice Stephen, and the odd thing is that the va doctors are not real concerned about the weight. I lost some weight, and they stoped talking about it, but i know at 5ft. 8in. tall, and 200lbs is wacked out when i know that i should weigh 160lbs. Even my wife doesn't think i'm very fat, as...

The back is my biggest problem. I had some back problems anyway, and then was rear ended. As of a year ago the va said no working out. Just walking. I go in for another mri next mo. One morning i was putting on my shoes, and discovered i couldn't get my rt. leg off of the floor when sitting straight...

nuts. Last post i was concerned about overtraining, as i did just that about a year ago with doing full body work outs three times per week, (one hour or more) and walking three of my off days, and of course being totally out of shape. Smart huh? This time i'm actually going to try to do it right ( ...

still kids. It's very nice of you to take the time to give some tips. I've been looking at this site for a year, but my back has held me up (plus lazyness, over eating, potato chips & beer) from exercising. I'm at the stage in life that if i don't make some changes, i'm problably not going to last a...

Forgot to add some stuff...

I'm looking to lose some weight, and then gain some muscle. I read (i think on this site) that a person of my age (59) looking to gain strength should only work each muscle group once per week because recuperation time is longer for us old f$$$s. I would like to work out each muscle group twice per ...
