Substitutes for bench and shoulder press

My left shoulder hurts a bit when doing bp's and sp's, and was wondering what other exercises could be used instead. I use a bowflex type rig. Thanks.

Thanks Stu, Iron man, Doc,

Put too much on your plate, and you might fail. Keep chewing and die. Thanks Stu, Iron Man, but I think the Doc's advice might be correct. Thanks to all of you for taking the time to care.

"Medical tests" is a pretty broad term. Some are screening, some are diagnostic. In Frank's case, they are monitoring his liver, not that he has liver disease, but because he is on medicines that are potentially hepatotoxic, and has a condition that is a risk for liver problems. Doc - I have used s...

I've gravitated towards hitting groups more frequently - it just means you'll need to do less intensity, possibly higher reps. It depends on your joints. Some find infrequent higher loads and fewer reps better, others more frequent lighter loads. You really need to experiment and see what works for...

Jungledoc can probably provide more insight but my view of medical tests is that they are mainly used as a screening test for desease so a "fine" reading just means you're not sick yet, not that you're completely well. Weight loss will come in spurts. You may only drop slowly, then all of a sudden ...

Frank, cutting the beer and carbs are the key to restoring your liver to health. Liver health has implications with abdominal fat and general health as well so it's crutial. When it comes to training, I find that recovery is most important as you age. It's balancing training and recovery that makes...

Frank--yes, you need to lose weight (I don't recall how much you weigh, but if you are overweight you need to lose), but it is particularly important for you that you do it by reducing carbohydrate intake. Carbs are your biggest enemy, especially the simple and processed carbs. You need cut flour, ...

I did Nutrisystem and found it very effective. Just loved having a structure and a community to troll...I mean support. I had spent 15 years, literally, telling myself I would take the weight off eventually and then not doing it. Felt really embarressed and hokey to sign up for something ...

Stu, I don't have access to a pool, but I think I can use my recumbent without hurting my akiles. I have been using it before and after workouts. ApolytonGP, very good advice about the weight. I started the day out eating a clean breakfast, and a salad for lunch. Looks like I will keep it going thro...

Frank, if your triglycerides are high, you need to cut way back on the processed food. Sugars and starches do that. I don't know this for sure, but I suspect even if drugs lower your triglycerides, it doesn't take away any of the stress on your liver. However not having all those sugars being proce...

Help with workout

I'm 62 with a bad back, and lately have been doing a upper/lower 4 day split. Now it seems that i'm not recovering as in bench press monday, then again on thursday with a lot less strength. If I workout once per week, I get stronger. So starting tomorrow i'm going to do a pull/push/legs 3 day split....

Re: Recent Cholestrol-lowering Drug trials

http://high-fat-nutrition.blogspot.com/2010/06/cholesterol-hypothesis-in-2010.html This is an important study that throws doubt of the use of drugs to control cholestrol. Hi Stu, As usual you come up with great reads, but to be honest, I didn't really understand a lot of it. I have high tri's, so i...

Anza, it all kind of depends on what your goals are, of which I'm not clear on. If you're trying to build muscle, and strength, you might want to take Kenny's suggestion. He's a competitive Powerlifter at age 60 plus and knows what he's talking about. However, if you're just into being physically f...

Frank, recovery time between workouts depends on how intense you exercise. I'm sure Kenny has it figured out how hard he can go and still progress on a 7 day cycle. Some people would become detrained over 7 days or at least deconditioned without at least 1 light workout in between. Others, especial...
