Lower Back Pain in Left Side

Hello all, As part of Madcow's 5 x 5 I have been doing a lot of squatting these past few months. It all has been going great, until about two weeks ago, when I started to get some lower back pain. It is emanating pretty close to the spine, and is pretty sharp. It was originally only on the first rep...

2) When I come back from my vacation, where should I start? Should I take off right from where I left off? Or should I drop back a workout, or even a week? After a week you should be able to start where you left off. Maybe you will lose 5-10lb off 1 rm but it shouldn't be anything extreme. If you w...

Vacation

I am currently in the midst of Madcow's 5x5 intermediate program. In the past 4 weeks, after a 4 week deload period, I have been progressing regularly up 2.5% each week on my major lifts. Next week I am going on a 10 day vacation where I will not have access to weightlifting facilities, and I had a ...

Thanks a lot for your comments. I think that I will keep eating for a caloric excess, though probably tone it down a little bit, and monitor how things go over the next two weeks or so. If I maintain the same muscle gain, with lower fat, then it'll have been a great success. Yet if I fail to gain mu...

Weight Gain Rate

Two quick questions for the forum: 1) What is considered a "good rate" to be putting on weight? 2) And what is a "good ratio" of muscle to fat for this weight? I am hoping to compare these answers to my own progress: In the past 3.5 weeks I have put on 7.5 lbs through a combination Madcow's Intermed...

First, thanks for all your input. Second, I have another question. I went to see my physical therapist today and he cleared me for all exercises, except he actually advocated my using of military instead of incline press, although with dumbbells. How would I incorporate dumbbells? Should I just do a...

I did Madcow last year. The 4 week workup is essential. You don't want to start near your max to start with as you won't get the adaptation you need. Make your increases small and regular. For example if your current 5 RM is 100, start at 80 and go up 5 every week. You'll pass your old max in 4 wee...

You could probably jump right in, but it does seem to be build with the assumption that until week 4 you're working under your current 5RM. I've seen that before - the idea of backing off for a while and working up and then past your current #RM. It seems like the investment of 4 weeks working in i...

You could just jump right in, IF you've been training a while, and have a good idea of what you're 5 RM is, but if you're a novice to fairly heavy lifting, use the 4 weej build up.It will pay off in the end and prepare your joints for what is to come. Tim Based on this, then I think I will pretty mu...

Question about 5 x 5

Hi, I am asking a question about this plan specifically: http://www.geocities.com/elitemadcow1/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm#CORE_DESCRIPTION:_ I am preparing to start this plan very soon, and I was wondering whether the 4 week build-up to my current 5RM was necessary, or whether I could just jump into...

30' 30 hours of cardio, thats quite a bit...j/k not enough for gaining muscle. Also cardio tends to kill gains. You probably need to eat more in general. Post workout nutrition could be another area to improve on. I wouldn't say eliminate cardio all together. Maybe 2-3 times per week and make sure ...

It sounds like you need more protein for starters. The next problem is you need to pick a goal and go for it. Either gain muscle or loose fat. Well I have been trying to gain muscle, after making that conscious choice, and I have been having problems. Ironmaiden, I am having the salad with the sand...
