It might be a good idea to list your workout routine to give us a better idea, as some routines are more conducive to muscle building than others. Two pounds of muscle in 6 weeks is not too bad, I'm guessing you are just gaining extra fat because you are eating too much. I would think you should tr...

Seem to only be gaining fat..

I have been trying to gain muscle these past 6 weeks after a 5 week period in which I lost some muscle and a lot of weight after barely being able to work out at all. I have been lifting twice a week (pull and legs), and doing cardio twice a week. I have not been able to do any pushing exercises bec...

I've never heard of posterior subluxation before now, but I looked it up and read up on it. A form of posterior glenohumeral instability (I sound 15% smarter just by typing that out). If you can't push, will you still be able to pull? Or will that either worsen your condition or create a new proble...

An update: Looks like it's posterior subluxation according to the orthopod. Has anyone had any experience here with this? My understanding is that it's fairly rare. Looks like PT and no pushing exercises for 6 months.. makes me wonder if I still want to try and gain weight while doing my pulling / l...

I disagree with this, To get muscle hypertrophy (growth) concentrate more on your reps and recovery in between sets. You will find your best results if you increase your reps to 10-12 and rest 60-90 seconds between (3-4) sets. It is important to choose a weight that you can do your last rep as good...

An update: I've had mixed results with the plan. While I definitely was pushing myself during the workouts, I think it was mostly my diet that held me back on real strength gains. I was eating like I wasn't sure if I wanted to gain or to cut, and the result was I really did neither. I went from this...

So does the Harris-Benedict multiplier not include the amount burned off in the exercise? i.e. Does the 1.55 multiplier include the amount burned off in the cardio or is it merely elevated to an increase in the metabolism? I usually burn about 500 calories per workout (whether cardio or weightliftin...

Stu
Well my BMR is about 2000 and I burn about 500 in my workouts.

If you lost 2 lbs of muscle in a month then 250/day is required just to stop that. You will need to double that at least in order to start to gain again. Start with 500 more than your currently eating plus enough to replace the exercise you do. I would call that your maintenance level. Eat 500 more...

Another update: I'm down to 173 lbs. Sine I dislocated my shoulder last month, I've been off of the upper body lifting. I was finally able to see a physical therapist today, and hopefully will be back doing some upper body lifting in the next week or so. While a portion of this weight loss has been ...

Dislocated Shoulder

So 2 weeks ago I dislocated by left shoulder doing an incline dumbell press. I've not done any upper body work since, and have done some cardio and then my leg workout. I have been waiting for my Physical Therapy appointment before doing any upper body work, but I don't think I can wait any longer t...

I have a couple questions for the general forum population: 1. Why use whey? (Just curious about any quantitative evidence) 2. I've been trying to reach the .8g of protein per # of lean mass body weight, but I am wondering what the justification for this sort of threshold i. Why .8? I realize that i...

Exercising 6 days is too much; you are not giving your muscles enough time to grow. Workouts only for 3 days in a week, work more on squats and dead lifts along with bench press. You also have to figure out your calorie and protein requirements. You need 6 meals per day, 25 gms of protein in every ...

The plan has been going pretty well, but I feel like it might be time to throw in some variety to my workout.

Currently I am doing 8 reps for every set of every workout (though not always at a constant weight).

Any suggestions on different rep strategies I might want to explore?

The pain comes when my arms are approaching full extension and it feels as if someone is taking my right shoulder and moving the ball of it around the socket.
