Errr, ok. Personally I would rather set a goal to be "bench my bodyweight" rather than max out a machine.

Why change what works? To change to something that works better, perhaps?

If I was driving a Ford Focus and someone offered me a Ford GT, I'd change ....

If you are talking about one of those dip type machines, then it is essentially another press. Can't see the need to do dips, bench press, overhead press AND incline in the same workout. Maybe if you were some kind of advanced bodybuilder. Maybe not even then. If I were you I'd switch out the machin...

All you really need is a horizontal (DB bench covers this) and a vertical (overhead press). You could do some incline as assistance work, or swap it in for bench or overhead (depending on how much incline) to change things up every 6-8 weeks or so. IMHO there is no need for someone with your goals t...

As a reply to Doc's post (and as a Brisbane resident), my favourite cities would be:

1. Rio de Janeiro
2. Tie: Sydney or Buenos Aires
3. Cape Town

Brisbane is a great place to live, although I think you did the right thing Apocalypton. If I was recommending places to go in Aus for a holiday, Brisbane wouldn't be too high up the list.

And Doc ... Beautiful river? Really? It's BROWN. Although the CityCat is pretty sweet.

I've been thinking about a journal. Might have to get off my butt and do it now that things are quiet at work ...

I generally use fitsync.com to record my lifts. I enter my workout into my phone and it uploads it to the net. Draws graphs, etc. May not work in PNG ...

I hear you. I'm right up there with 112.5 kgs. And I'm only 68 kgs so I'm one of the smallest guys.

That said, most people do at least three sets of 8+, the most volume I ever do is generally with 5x5 (for which I'm more like 105-107.5 kgs).

I shared the rack with a guy who squatted up to 160 kgs (350 lbs) last workout. That is by far the heaviest I've seen at our gym. He did about 5x8 too.

Can't imagine what the reaction would be like if one of you 500lb+ squatters rocked up at our gym.

Thanks for the suggestion Doc. I thought about it some more and there's really no reason I couldn't separate the squat and the dead. I could put squats up front on the heavy upper body day with no real issues. I probably wouldn't put deads there as I find they affect my rows and pull-ups. Also means...

Dead lift. Man against gravity, fighting over the bar. When you pull on the bar, and it feels like it's set in concrete, but then it moves and comes up, that's the best.
Yes. Love that.

I think Matt Z uses straps from what I saw last time I read his journal. Ask him if he is a pu...wimp. I personally haven't used them yet, but I am considering using them when I do RDLs. I'll probably just use them for the last set, so my grip still gets worked for the first few. Chalk is for real m...

When I dropped my frequency of squatting from once a week to once every ten days, I started increasing my squat by 2.5 kgs a workout where it had previously stalled. Granted, that could have been the effect of the prior 5x5 period, or it could have been increased recovery time, but nonetheless, it's...
