Muscles unrelated to an exercise

Hey, Ive been noticing something lately. Why is it that contracting muscles that do not appear to have anything to do with an exercise make it easier to do? F.e. why does contracting my hams and abs help me bench? By this i mean i make a conscious effort to contract them... This has been bugging me ...
