Hey Doc, Nice that you have a job that makes a difference in the world, you should be proud, you have a noble profession. Sounds like you stayed with some really good friends, kind of a good story that they went all out for you, it reminded me that their are still good people in the world among all ...

I always time my rest time between sets. It's another option for training, for example instead of adding 5 lbs, you could cut your rest time by 10 or 15 seconds. On large compound lifts, I like to make sure I have had adequate time to recover. I would think it would be a good habit to get into and i...

I found this thread interesting because I'm going to switch to the 5-3-1, and Doc (who is obviously very knowledgeable)is considering something else. I'm going to use it because it seems ideal for an older lifter. It's very versatile (after the big lifts you can do bbb, , body building..whatever)has...

Here's a couple articles on the 5-3-1. The articles give a few variations of the workout. I hope its not considered spam, if it is please delete. http://www.mensfitness.com/fitness/workout_routines/616 http://www.mensfitness.com/fitness/workout_routines/451 These really helped me come up with a work...

I lift for quality of life, I had heart troubles at a young age and just want to stick around to see my kids go to college. I have made it my "hobby and lift and do wind sprints or some sort of HIIT to stay in shape. I'm not that big or strong that I can ever compete but it's still nice to be able t...

Another deadlft grip question

Is there any concern with muscle imbalance when using the same alternate grip (not switching which hand is pronated) or is that just another myth? The reason I ask is I'm starting to get into some grip issues, and having a mixed grip with my left hand pronated is the most comfortable for me. Iv'e on...

Trap bar squats :?:

That might be a good idea for someone with back problems, I've never done them but maybe someone on the forum has experience with them, and could suggest whether they would be helpful to you or not.

Seems like you could start out light and it would be easy to keep good form.

I'm assuming by pronated grip, you mean double overhand? I would recommend learning to use an alternatining grip (one hand pronated, one supinated) or learn to hook grip (thumb under). Jason - when you use the alternating grip do you switch which hand is pronated each set and if not is muscle imbal...

I'd would trying going light, 10-15 minutes of Hiit is still a pretty good workout. I can see why you would be concerned doing squats 3 days a week. I try to have at least 2 days rest between hitt (wind sprints) and squats or dead lifts. I do squats and deads on different days and only once a week. ...

Maybe you just need to take a week off and let things heal. Ask your self if this was someone else asking for advice on what to do,what would you advise. I know that I've pushed my self when injured and payed the price, now I try and lay off when I pull a muscle or what ever now that I'm getting old...

I would keep doing it, Personally I think exercising the heart is the most important thing you can do and is often over looked. There are many ways to do hiit and the advantage, as you probably already know, is that it burns fat not muscle. I do wind sprints and jump rope. If your worried about burn...

I'm 49 and started squats about 7 or 8 months ago. Before I started I did these dumbell squats http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/GluteusMaximus/DBSquat.html . I would just advise to make sure your form is correct, there are people much more qualified then me to help here, but I always remember to ...
