Seven is still a good start - why dont you focus on building your pull up numbers as the primary goal and add the assistance work in afterwards? I would personally go and try three sets of five, then three sets of six, then three sets of seven... adding some assistance afterwards Thanks, that's wha...

Lat bar

I've been reading these forums for a few months, and have bought into the arguments that the 6 core lifts are the most efficient way to build overall strength, and the corresponding argument that machines (think: leg extensions) are not so useful by comparison. So now my workout is the core 6 + upri...

Re: Using heavy dumbells from bench work

I have adjustable dbs and the ends are not soft, so using the technique of bouncing them off my knees is uncomfortable to say the least. I had the same issue when I was starting out. I would curl the dumbbells to my shoulders before I sat, and then ease back onto the bench. Thinking back, this was ...

Give Blood?

I've always given blood once/twice a year, but have not done so since I started lifting.

What are the implications for the lifting schedule. I can guess I would not go from the blood center to the gym, but after that? One day off? Two? Three?

You got to squat in PE at school? Bloody hell, we had like 3 treadmills and that was it! Not only that but once we got to lift. The coach spent the entire class getting 3 guys to spot him, and once in awhile he'd get up from the bench and yell at us all that he expected us to "Lift! I want to see y...

A Rant About Physical Education

I was going to post this in General at first, but it is more of a rant than a question, so I figured it might be more appropriate here. The gist of my rant is this: I think I got completely ripped off in terms of Physical Education in High School. I also suspect the vast majority, probably like 95%+...

Thanks, early returns from the first changes are all encouraging.

Re: Stiff Neck?

Basically, six weeks ago I began to have a permanent low grade soreness in my neck, right side. Doesn't get worse, doesn't get better, does not restrict motion, does not prevent any exercises, like DOMS that does not go away.. Is the neck soreness worse when you wake up, or are you aware of it whil...

Stiff Neck?

Understanding that I can't expect a diagnosis on a forum, I am wondering if there is a well-known cause for neck stiffness, just as we might immediately think of bad bench form if somebody is complaining of shoulder pain. Basically, six weeks ago I began to have a permanent low grade soreness in my ...

Remember, this is determined, not by any strength standards table (it sounds like something that one would say after looking at such tables) but by your ability to make progress with linear progression of the w...

Re: Balance issues- Please help

I have extremely flat feet and very bad balance, especially when standing on one foot. I have attempted training on "unstable surfaces" and balancing with one foot on bosu balls and nothing helps. Can anyone think of something I could be over looking? Could weak muscles in my feet be the culprit? I...

Your primary goal should be injury prevention. No argument here. As I have officially completed 6 months, and am a cat's whisker away from crossing into intermediate on bench for my weight class, I've made up my first official opinion, which is: There is no good/bad or right/wrong, only progress vs...

Auxiliaries are for strength or size?

Thanks to the good folks here I have broken off my plateau and am making progress across the board once again. While my goal remains overall fitness, my specific goals week over week are shifting towards maintaining progress on bench and squat. Soon I'll be thinking of working in a "cardio day" but ...

It's a great idea, but it's already been thought of. Called a cable bar system. I don't know if JV invented it, or just popularized it. See the top photo here http://jva.ontariostrongman.ca Cables are hung from the end of the bar and clipped on to plate supports, which slide down a tube Tim I think...

It's not reasonable to think that you can to 3x8 of a bench variant, then jump right back into what you did fresh a couple of days ago! And 135 is hardly a warm-up for the weights you're lifting. Even many of the "big boys" start their bench warm-up with an empty bar. Try something like 10x45-5x95-...
