Re: What motivates you?
All of my motivations are superficial. First and most important I love the activity of lifting weights. I am also motivated to gain all of the ripple effects. Lifting heavy makes me desire healthy food which makes me feel good. Lifting heavy makes me sleep the sleep of the righteous dead, which make...

Re: Knee above parallel - pain
I had a similar problem and also do plenty of squats etc. Do you get pain also when going into the hole on a squat? I also had that. Was driving me crazy. Sit-ups cured it for me. They say sit-ups ain't great for your abs because the hip flexors come into a lot, and that seemed to be what I needed.

Re: Homemade farmer's bars
It occurred to me that using dumbbell handles would offer a much better grip than the metal nipple piples I'm using now. Will try that on Saturday.

Homemade farmer's bars
So by random development over the years I found myself with 4 50# plates with 1" holes, which are useless to me. Also with a 1" thick 5' bar also mostly useless though I sometimes leave it loaded for curls. Realized that if I just picked up another of those 5' bars I could set up some farmer's bars ...

Re: Anxiety/ panic attacks while lifting
I have had exactly one panic attack in my life and it was terrifying. I can only imagine that it would be frustrating and discouraging to experience this as a regular thing - unpredictable and probably always at the worst time. Can we assume you have been offered the two routes available from profes...

Re: The new "Whatever" program
@Stephen: Thanks: @Robert, I think I read the one lift a day program a long time ago - just went back and re-read it. Makes a lot of sense for my current situation. The precise 4 week thing might not work, but the surprise interruptions in training just become unscheduled deload periods, so it can a...

The new "Whatever" program
Hello everyone! First off: I'm not dead. Just thought I'd share a bit about the new program I have devised, which is to do whatever the heck I feel like. I am actually not joking. My life has changed a lot in the last year and I have had to respond to new pressures. Work is picking up and I may be t...

Re: 531 Deadlifts and an older lifter
@Cruiser, I guess that leaves only this question: is your deadlift going up with what you are doing now?
If yes, keep doing it until it stops working.
If no, then it's time to change.

Re: 531 Deadlifts and an older lifter
Cruiser, Welcome to our little community! It is good to have you. I am 48 and also do 5/3/1 -- but not for deadlifts. The trainer you met is in good company, many people feel that volume on deadlifts is counter-productive. My own trainer has always said he doesn't like anything better than a triple ...

Re: Incline Close Grip Bench Press
You can do almost any barbell move with dumbbells. Actually I suppose you can do all of them.
Dumbbells have the advantage of training the stabilizers, and they also reveal left/right differences so they are pretty cool.

Re: Lying Shoulder External Rotation - Body Position
This exercise is not meant to be done with high weight. Three pounds is fine. I sometimes do it at night before going to sleep with just the weight of my arm. This exercise is about waking up the muscle so it is active and in regular use. It is never going to get super strong. In fact the external r...

Re: I stink at one arm rows
We did a lot of work on these Tuesday. Having previously corrected the "lats only" mistake, he mostly focused on getting me to do it slowly and under control, and he really loves variations where you pinch and hold at the top. Overall I have far more confidence on this move now. He does say that wit...

Re: Request for Feedback on Program
Kenny, thanks for the detail, I've been meaning to reply for a couple of days. Lower Back Extensions I watched Bret's video on back extension about 3 times and tried it on Tuesday. * Lowered pads so I could get some bend in the hips * Squeezed glutes hard coming up * Was careful to avoid hyper-exten...
