Re: Request for Feedback on Program

Improving leg drive is a great way for me to improve DL Conventional Deadlift Research (McLaughlin) has shown the firing sequence is Back-Legs-Back. That means breaking the weight off the floor revolves around initialing the drive with the lower back. Stiff Leg Deadlifts, Good Mornings etc are effe...

Request for Feedback on Program

Now that I've been at this over 3 years I'm accumulating enough knowledge of my own needs to try to put together a program that directly hits what I'm after. Here is what I'm pretty confident about: 1) Improving leg drive is a great way for me to improve DL 2) I have never done speed work on DL, and...

Re: Is a 1RM useful?

I can't speak to the bodybuilding angle because my interest is powerlifting. A powerlifter measure's his competitive score by the combined 1RM on Squat, Bench and Deadlift. So the 1RM is important as a marker of overall progress. However, not even powerlifters are going for the 1RM all of the time, ...

Re: I stink at one arm rows

Wrong in what way? Your trainer probably should have caught that. Yes. Normally I would defend my trainer as he has helped me a lot, and point out we rarely do upper body stuff together, but this one kind of ticks me off. This is very embarrassing, but I seem to have been trying to pull entirely wi...

Re: I stink at one arm rows

Good news and bad news.

Bad news is I seem to have been doing them wrong for .... forever.

Good news is I have plenty of easy gains ahead of me. Also sore as hell.

My trainer says so. Powerlifters are thick on the ground at his facility and they all say the same thing.

Re: Random crap

Have found what may be my new favorite gym. Today saw a woman pull 4 plates for a double. She had a back bigger than most men I know. Funny thing about female body-builders, it's perfectly ok to walk up to a woman you've never met and compliment her on her body. However, I stuck to comp...

Re: Root Canals

I won the reverse lottery with teeth. I am "high risk" and won't go into details because you don't want to know. So that means I've had more root canals than I care to say. The good news is a modern dentist with up-to-date equipment can have you in and out in 2 hours, they can use this super-nifty s...

Classic question in reverse

I want to ask the reverse of a commonly asked question here. Every so often somebody asks, how do I know if I'm over-training? The answer is easy enough to understand: mood goes flat, sleep and appetite may go erratic, and of course, your numbers go down. If you've been going heavy for along time an...

Very basic questions about rear delts

I have to admit I do not understand at all how we strengthen our rear delts. I know the exercises to do, I just don't get how it works. My experience with the main compound lifts may actually be getting in my way. For those you have a sustained program of varying intensity and volume and you can mea...

Re: Recovery, pullups and situps

@Stu, For pullups so far I've only done 2-3 sets of 5 and it's still on the whenever-I-happen-to-do-it program. I did this yesterday on bench day and had a great workout later in the day (set a 95% rep PR). That's only one data point but at least it was a good one. It did occur to me to keep the wei...

Re: Random crap

I'm bouncing around gyms.

The "powerlifter friendly" gym made me feel very unwelcome. Nasty passive-aggressive stuff.

No way I will find a gym with safety bar, trap bar, and a platform. Bummer. May have to do some of this stuff at home again.

Re: I stink at one arm rows

@Matt I've always rowed at least twice/week. I'm increasing that to try to bring up my back. My grip is neutral, so the db handle is parallel to my torso. I tried some today, focusing on how it felt. It appears I'm not using my back at all, just lats. So while I've been told my form is ok, I may sim...

I stink at one arm rows

My trainer is not often flat-out cruel or taunting, but he does tell me he's got women who can one arm row better than I can. He tells me my technique is good, but the needle does not move. I can do 50# for about 7 reps, and my trainer says I should be at 60# for 15. What happens is that once I fati...

Re: Goals for 2014

My goals for 2013 were these: Deadlift: 5 plates (current 455) Squat: 400 lb (current 320, no idea if this will happen in 2013) Bench: 1.5x body weight (not expected in 2013) In short, results were not great. Deadlift: Still at 455. (most recent best lift: 435) Squat: from 320 to 335. Encouraging, b...
