Recovery, pullups and situps

Every so often I read an article that says to do pullups through the day if you want to get better at them. The usual recommendation is to do a smaller set than you would in an all-out workout, and to do this every day. This is appealing to me largely because doing it this way can systematic (not ra...

Re: Whining About Front Squat

@Knob, I'll make a video this Saturday when I try again. Not sure if the forward lean is upper back or lower back.

I'm doing same stance as my regular squat, feet wider than shoulder-width but not super-wide, toes pointed out a bit past 30 degrees.

Whining About Front Squat

I tried front squat on Saturday and have the usual first timer's complaint: It hurts! In short, starting in the power cage, I got under the bar and did the cross-arm thing and got the bar onto my front delts, held there by having my arms raised a bit above parallel. The problem came just before gett...

Re: Assistance for bottom of bench

@hoose: thanks. Your advice triggered a Eureka moment, and I'm going to shift the accessories on bench and press day to favor more rowing pure and simple. My trainer really likes me to hold a row at the top, a "pause row" I guess you might call it. @knob, I'm going to have to read through that a cou...

Re: Assistance for bottom of bench

Pause reps. I'm assuming you mean pause right at the very bottom? Just like pause squats? If you are collapsing - work on your back. Anything specific? The moves I rotate through are: one arm row, barbell row, row machine, inverted row, pullups, plus the obvious deadlift. But is this general advice...

Assistance for bottom of bench

My bench pattern has changed significantly over the past 7-8 months. My largest issue now is getting the bar off my chest for heavier singles or doubles. I think there are two issues here. One is that I STILL have a hard time staying in the groove on bench. My trainer gave me the amazing simple advi...

Re: First Time for a Powerlifting meet

You can probably find something online by looking for the federations: usapowerlifting.com will have a schedule of meets. The question I would ask is if you are lifting in a powerlifter-friendly gym with other powerlifters, especially those that compete. There are plenty of reasons why you want to b...

Re: Personal Best Log

Bench 190x8 Beats 190x6 set 3 weeks ago. I don't normally track PR's over 5 reps anymore, but this one stunned me. Making a 2 rep increase in 3 weeks has never happened to me, and I've been at about 190x5 for two years. On bench this does NOT translate to a higher 1RM for me at all without significa...

Re: Personal Best Log

Deadlift 605lbs (cause I didn't want to mess around with 2.5lb plates) Straps, no belt. 1st attempt I got off the floor but then the grip in my left hand failed. Second attempt was with straps and went up without a hitch. I'd guess I have anywhere from 20-50 more lbs possible. But not going to push...

Re: Personal Best Log

Holy freaking cow.

Squat: 335 at bw 175

That's fifteen pounds less body weight than previous pr of 325 in April.

Also, first 1 Rep PR since the "life event" referenced here: http://www.exrx.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=9488" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Bench Press 200x5

Beats 195x5 a few months ago when I was about 10 lbs heavier. Nice!

Re: The mixed grip deadlift problem

To follow up on Kenny's detailed answer, I learned early that if I went underhand with left hand I got a weird pain at the top of my left shoulder, but going underhand on right (happens to be my dominant) works and I have no issues. It has been well over a year doing that and I just don't think abou...
